IY Electoral Work Takes Center Stage This Week!

WEDNESDAY: HEAR THE PLAN

The road to the House majority runs through California.

This single-minded motto fuels the California Grassroots Alliance, a statewide network of volunteers organized to sweep six purple districts and take back the House majority. As one of the founding member groups, IY has been laser-focused working with another founding partner, the Bay Area Coalition, to register new voters and canvass to engage likely Democratic voters.

Register and attend Power in the House, the Alliance kickoff Wednesday April 24 at 7pm PT on Zoom, where three terrific speakers will describe what it takes to flip a tough battleground House district:

  • Representative Katie Porter, D, CA-47
  • Ben Wikler, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin
  • Jessica Craven, activist, publisher of Chop Wood, Carry Water

We all remember the California heartbreakers in 2022: Democrat Adam Gray lost CA-13 by only 564 votes, and Rudy Salas finished a mere 3,132 votes behind in CA-22. But for 2024, Alliance research shows there are six purple districts—and that’s where the Alliance will be working to support groups across CA and the country to sweep these six districts and take back the House majority!

Let’s hit the road!

THURSDAY: FUNDRAISE FOR IN-DISTRICT GROUPS

Join us online April 25th at 5pm when we gather in support of Central Valley Matters’ grassroots groups when Dolores Huerta and Jane Fonda will discuss “Why the Central Valley Matters.”

We’ll learn how, when people can come together, organize, and take direct action, they can protect their rights. Many of us take fresh water and clean air for granted, yet thousands of people who live in CA-22 don’t have access to clean drinking water, breathe dirty air, and the region has the highest childhood asthma rates in the nation.

With our contributions, residents there learn they can elect people who will represent their interests and work to improve healthcare, working conditions and the local environment.

The grassroots groups we support focus on voter engagement and mobilization, key factors in changing the power structure in the Central Valley. Please invite your friends and family to our one-of-a-kind event! Donate early so that your dollars will have the biggest impact.

Who has the power? We have the power!

SUNDAY: TAKE ACTION WITH FELLOW CANVASSERS

Are you as concerned as we are about a possible MAGA victory in 2024? Well we have a plan (see Wednesday above)! And we know how we can help others engage voters in the Central Valley (see Thursday above).

But don’t sit at home & worry. Instead join us this Sunday April 28 to knock doors in Lathrop with 8-12 of your Yolo County neighbors. Our goal is to fill three cars and turn out a dozen door-knockers – to meet up with our fellow activists from Indivisible Sacramento and the Bay Area Coalition.

Can you join us and bring a friend?

We offer early training as well as on-site coaching for beginners. We’ll be driving to district CA 13 to talk to voters and do our part to help flip the district and turn the US House BLUE! (The research shows that canvassing can boost our margin by 9%.) Register and if you need to chat before signing up reach out to Megan at meganqmurphy@outlook.com. Can’t go on 4/28? How about Saturday in Modesto on May 11th or Merced on June 8th!

Continue to call for an immediate ceasefire and to withhold arms transfers to Israel

We continue to call for a ceasefire and to withhold arms transfers to Israel contingent on Israel’s compliance with international law and US laws for security assistance. Please read the Indivisible.org latest statement below calling for all the parties to do everything in in their power to enact a durable ceasefire, and then call your Senators/Representative:

Read Indivisible.org’s statements on the Israel/Palestine crisis
Sen. Padilla Sacramento phone: 916-448-2787

Sen. Butler Washington D.C. phone: 202-224-3841
Sen. Butler web contact form

Contact only your own Representative (Rep. Mike Thompson or Rep. Doris Matsui). Neither has yet signed on to this letter from more than 30 members of Congress calling to withhold arms transfers to Israel– we want our Representatives to take action!

Rep. Matsui Sacramento phone: (916) 498-5600

Example call/email script (your own words are best!)

I am a constituent and I am [calling/writing] today to ask [Sen. Padilla/Sen. Butler/Rep. Thompson/Rep. Matsui] to publicly call for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. It’s heartbreaking to witness the loss of civilian life in Gaza and the West Bank stemming from the Israeli military’s campaign. Any humanitarian solution to this crisis starts with stopping the bombs. Achieving safety and security for Israelis and Palestinians will not be achieved through a continued campaign of collective punishment.

President Biden should withhold arms transfers immediately, contingent on an independent and transparent investigation by the US into Israel’s compliance with international law and compliance with the US laws for security assistance. No more bombs should go towards indiscriminate attacks on Palestinian civilians or aid workers.

I am counting on you to publicly call for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and to use your position to push for an end to hostilities and to deliver urgently needed humanitarian assistance. Please tell President Biden to withhold arms transfers contingent on Israel’s compliance with international law and US laws for security assistance. Thank you.
