A Veteran’s Letter to Members of Congress About the Trial and His Oath

Constitution and Oath of Office

Members of Congress,

I am writing to you as a veteran of the United States Army. I served for 13 years and have been deployed twice to Afghanistan and to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort in Louisiana. My reason for this letter is to ask for the chance to uphold my oath of enlistment, which I carry with me even after being honorably discharged. Regardless of where I have stood politically, the Constitution has always been extremely important to me. As part of my oath, I would like to have the opportunity to testify against Donald Trump.

On Jan. 6, 2021, the unthinkable happened. Terrorists inspired by Trump’s words carried out an insurrection on our nation’s Capitol that resulted in the death of five Americans, plus two suicides in the days and weeks following the attacks. Among the dead were women, veterans and police officers. These are the people that Republicans always say matter to them.

When words inspire violence and death, they are no longer protected under the First Amendment but are in violation of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Trump is clearly responsible for the insurrection. You must find him guilty.

As a veteran, I want to state my case about why he should be convicted; my words are supported by many other veterans who also want to uphold their oaths to our country. If Trump is not held accountable, we will set a dangerous precedent for future presidents to act like dictators and place themselves above the law. This kind of outcome is something that our forefathers were against and one reason we have checks and balances in the Constitution. All I am asking is to follow through with my oath of enlistment and make my case about a man who refuses to even testify to prove his innocence. If he were a a true leader, he would take responsibility for his words and his followers. Since he will not, we must show the American people that we do not take kindly to seditionists and traitors who challenge to the rule of law. Soldiers and veterans are loyal to the Constitution, not to a man or party, and it’s our job to uphold that oath — so I ask that we make our oath mean something by allowing the voice of veterans to be heard. We are a country of the people, not of Trump.

  1. President Trump led an insurrection on the Capitol to try to end the democratic process of the peaceful power of transfer. He and his violent mob of followers, mad about the lies spewed by Trump and dishonest politicians alike, putt lawmakers lives, their families lives, staffers, custodians, Capitol Hill police officers lives in jeopardy. Those sentences and facts should be enough, but for some reason today we the American people are led to believe they are not. A President should never get away with inciting violence and we as veterans demand that the Senate do the right thing in not allowing Trump to ever run for office again.

  2. I am an Air Force veteran and I too, would like to testify against Donald Trump. I am also a prior government civilian employee who proudly worked for the VA and FAA. I have taken the oath to this country and it’s constitution twice, I uphold and honor my oath. Please vote to convict Trump, if you all stand together and honor the oath you swore to uphold and the will of the people, he will never have power over you again. Thank you.

  3. I am a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. As part of my oath of enlistment, which has no expiration date, I swore to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States if America.

We would like the opportunity to testify during the Impeachment hearings. We swore to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The insurrectionists who stormed the United States Capitol are, simply put, domestic terrorists. They tried to forcibly overturn a free and fair election. This is not the America I know.

This insurrection was clearly inspired by Donald J. Trump, along with his apologists. These people were led to believe that they were correcting an imaginary wrong. They’d been lied to, and believed they were a protected and chosen people, operating safely and without consequences under the wing of a corrupt man with a Presidential authority.

During the insurrection of January 6, 2021, Capitol police were beaten, injured, and also killed. The insurrectionists called for murder of Congressional Leaders. This is not the a United States of America. These are actions of a mob, inspired by a man desperate to retain power unlawfully.

This was an attempt to destroy and overthrow our Democracy. We cannot allow this to happen. We must convict Donald J. Trump. We cannot move forward as a nation without accountability. We must hold this man accountable to prevent this from ever happening again.

Convict him. We have, and will continue to uphold our oath. It is time for you to uphold yours.

    Sincerely,
    Colleen M. McIntyre, Sgt.USMC, Ret.

  4. As a retired Navy Chief, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Donald Trump took that same oath, and then blatantly incited violence before, during and after the Stop the Steal rally. He continued to forment a violent insurrection. He has been rightly impeached, and he should be convicted and master from enjoying future office.

  5. Also a veteran, Army, 69-72, who swore the oath to the Constitution and the citizenry of our country.
DJT is unfit to hold any future office and Congress needs to vote this into truth.
It’s NOT about ‘party’. It’s NOT about if you might get re-elected to the seat you hold at the will of the voters in your district. It’s NOT about your ego or feelings.
It IS about the rule of law and that nobody is above the law.
It’s all on video and there is lots of video.
    The whole world is watching.
