Republican Hypocrisy: Benghazi Committee vs. January 6 Commission

Clinton, January 6, and Benghazi

The January 6 commission is well underway. Members of the committee shared their comments and four Capitol police officers, who witnessed the events, shared their testimonies. Their words showed their patriotism but were also heartbreaking, and for the life of me, I can’t get over the fact that Republicans and conservative talking heads continue to justify this domestic terror attack by either using deflection, conspiracy theories, or even an alternate reality. Some actually have the nerve to question the legitimacy of the commission and the investigation.

I ask everyone reading this: Where was the questioning of the Benghazi committee, when Hillary Clinton was investigated half a dozen times by House Republicans? Did conservative pundits and Republican officials call the Benghazi committee a political stunt? The Benghazi attack and Clinton’s emails were big-time Republican talking points of 2016. Even I used them to make my case for Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

The fact is, there was clear evidence of incitement from Trump and Republican co-conspirators. You would think that Republican leadership would work with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House to get to the bottom of what happened. After all, they made a big deal — 10 investigations over more than two years — about the attack on Benghazi, which was out of Hillary Clinton’s control even as she tried to prevent what happened. But no, the standards are not equal. In fact, Republicans have done everything they can to obstruct this January 6 hearing, either because they know many people at the highest levels of government are responsible, or because the disinformation and misinformation that goes on cause their supporters to continue to believe the Big Lie. These politicians don’t want to lose Trump’s base.

We the people need to start holding Republicans and pundits accountable and start asking why the Benghazi committee was legitimate but not the January 6 insurrection commission? If MAGA and the Republican Party truly cared about the death of Ashli Babbitt as they did about Ambassador Chris Stevens in Benghazi, they would want Trump to receive the same kind of commission and investigation. We can’t let up. If Kevin McCarthy was to gain any more power, we can kiss American democracy goodbye.

And hear the truth from Kevin McCarthy himself, on “Hannity” back in September 2015:

McCarthy’s full quote reads:

"...What you're going to see is a conservative speaker that takes a conservative Congress that puts a strategy [in place] to fight and win. And let me give you one example. Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she's un-trustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened had we not fought and made that happen."

  1. I totally agree with your analysis David. To me, there is no doubt that Trump and his administration have something to hide. The highest Republican officials know it. I would also like to point out the cowardice of the GOP leadership. They are so afraid for their political careers that they would rather abandon the country and lie about one of the worst terrorist attacks. If the GOP continues in this line, it is doomed to disappear. We saw the limits of TRUMP’s “power” a few days ago, in the special election in Texas, where a Republican not endorsed by Trump won against a Republican endorsed by Trump.
