Introducing The Ohio Scoop
The Ohio Scoop is your weekly campaign fix, filled with the most up-to-date information about Ohio Democrats and everything happening on the campaign trail here in Ohio. The name pays homage to one of Ohio’s favorite snacks – Ice Cream. We’re here so you can get your political scoop, all in one place.
If you’re new to the list, welcome. You were added because you are one of Ohio Democrats’ best supporters. For those of you who are returning, welcome back.
We had a busy week on the campaign trail, so let’s jump right in.
DeWine Dips Out on Debate
It’s likely you’ve seen more cutouts of Governor Mike DeWine’s face on popsicle sticks than you have seen him in person. That’s because he likes to hide from the voters of Ohio.
A few weeks ago, the Governor, whose Ohio taxpayer funded home is a short (eye roll) 10-minute drive away, dipped out on a debate against Jim Renacci, another clown running for Governor.
This week, former President Trump will be in Delaware, Ohio for a rally. Guess who likely won’t be there? You guessed it, Governor Mike DeWine. Perhaps the real reason he won’t be in attendance is because the de facto leader of the national Republican party might endorse Jim Renacci over the sitting Republican governor.
OR did the Governor embarrass himself too much after state troopers pulled him away from a fight with his other primary opponent, Joe Blystone, at a beef expo in Columbus? The only thing you need to know about Joe Blystone is he, like Mike DeWine, had to return over $100k in illegal campaign donations.
The Redistricting Split
GOP-gerrymandered maps have been struck down for the fourth time since last August. This time, the Ohio Redistricting Commission chose two independent mapmakers to draw fair maps. But at the very last minute, Republican commissioners ignored their recommendations, opting for a GOP-staff drawn map instead. This insanity would be like your teacher giving you the exam answer key, but instead, you decided to copy your buddy who failed the class three years in a row.
We could write this in three sentences, three paragraphs or three pages. We’ll spare you the details and go with 3 words for Republican redistricting committee members: DO YOUR JOB.
Did you hear Tim Ryan raised a whopping $4.1 million from January through March for his Senate run?? Or, that Tim Ryan’s campaign raised another $506,178 in the last two weeks?
This is a record amount raised for a Democratic Senate candidate at this point in the cycle in Ohio. According to his campaign, 97% of contributions were $100 or less. Ryan’s impressive numbers also include 29,239 new donors last quarter and an additional 3,000 new donors in the last two weeks. Yes, you read that right.
It’s clear Tim Ryan has what it takes to inspire words into action. Help us elect Tim Ryan to the Senate here.
The Rocky REPUBLICAN SENATE Road
It’s been a long, rocky road for the clowns running for US Senate on the Republican side.
Against the wishes of the U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, Donald Trump endorsed J.D. Vance in the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate. Trump’s endorsement will only pour gasoline on this intra party brawl and make it even harder for Republicans to coalesce around whichever out-of-touch millionaire hobbles out of this chaotic primary.
J.D. Vance is a multi-millionaire elitist who left Ohio behind for Silicon Valley. Tim Ryan has spent his entire life fighting for the same working people who J.D. Vance disparaged in an entire book before carpetbagging his way back to the Buckeye State to run for US Senate.
We’ll go out on a limb and guess you already know J.D.Vance is a phony. But, just in case you need another reminder, read these texts between Vance and his college roommate where Vance reveals his true feelings about Trump. Congrats on the endorsement, Vance.
Flavor of the Week from ODP Chair Liz Walters
We asked ODP Chair Liz Walters about her favorite Ohio ice cream and she said “It’s like trying to pick a favorite child!” We made her pick the “favorite child” and here’s what she said:
“I’m an Akron girl through and through. There’s nothing I love better than an Akron Institution. Strickland’s Frozen Custard.”
And for flavor? “Probably the Vanilla Almond Special they have in the summer.”
There’s no place like home, but you can buy ice cream that tastes like it. Learn more about Chair Walters here.
Chocolate Chip into our Campaign
Its officially the 2nd Quarter of 2022. Will you help us kick off our Q2 fundraising?
A Sprinkle of Sappington
Nelsonville City Auditor Taylor Sappington is ready to make history as the first openly gay Ohio State Auditor. He is a proud Appalachian and understands the needs of Ohioans across the state. Find out more about him here.
Bottom line: Taylor Sappington is a down-to-Earth Ohioan ready to balance the books and catch the crooks, unlike his out-of-touch opponent who thinks the will of Ohio voters is a “magical mystery ratio.“
Check out Taylor’s tweets here.

In Case You Missed It
Until Next Week
We are just 7 months away from Election Day.
We have a lot of work to do to get more field organizers on the ground in every corner of the state. We have offices to open, phones banks to hold, canvasses to launch, and of course – thousands of unregistered Democrats to register by Election Day. To do this, we need your help and we need it now. Please consider contributing as much as you can to help build the infrastructure needed to win.
If you’re unsure about how much you can still contribute to help us win in November and beyond, simply reply to this email. My team will respond with what you can still do to help us grow the team.
As always, thank you for standing with us. We are so grateful for your incredible support.
I hope to see you out on the campaign trail,
