Fighting for Voting Rights on Two Fronts
Passage of the For the People Act is important, but it does not guarantee electoral victory and if it fails, we are not doomed. We have to continue pressuring Congress, but we also have to work on the state level.
And Virginia is critical.
Thanks to the blue trifecta that Democrats obtained in 2019, Virginia now has some of the most voter-friendly laws in the country. That doesn’t, however, make Virginia a safe blue state. The three statewide offices and the House of Delegates, all currently held by Democrats, are up for election in 2021. Keeping them is far from a sure thing. From the DCist (November 2020):
In Virginia’s Vote For Biden,
Democrats See Blue Wave Wobble While Republicans Spy Hope
“Joe Biden swept Virginia on Tuesday with a comfortable nine-point margin, exceeding the performance of Democratic contenders before him. Despite that win, some Democrats in Virginia now worry that narrow congressional victories and a failed attempt to flip a House seat reveal the “blue wave” that gave their party power during the Trump era could possibly have stalled. Republicans, on the other hand, say they are seeing flickers of promise.”We can’t afford to wobble in Virginia

What happens in Virginia this November is critical for the 2022 Midterms.
Virginia is the model for why states matter. In the words of Tram Nguyen, founder of the New VA Majority, “Virginia has created generational change in 18 months and while other states have turned away from democracy, we are rushing towards it at full speed.”
Let’s keep this momentum going and keep Virginia blue.

A Big Thank You to Vermonters from
Monroe County, Pennsylvania, Organizers
“In June we received various amounts of funds from ActBlue that were marked “VT for NEPA!” A little research found that a group in Vermont, Lean Left Vermont, was raising money for 4 counties in NEPA and dividing it 4 ways for the month. Small amounts build up over time and these funds are greatly appreciated. This money is a miracle coming at a time when our main source of fundraising, our MCDC Resource Guide, was cancelled last year because of the COVID pandemic.”
