The fight for voting rights enters a new phase

Click here to go straight to the call scripts!

Hi Indivisibles,

Last week we saw Biden back away from supporting an end to the filibuster to pass S-1, and Senate leaders now appear to be focusing on a more limited bill. Both Padilla (202-224-3553) and Feinstein (202-224-3841) are on the Rules and Administration Committee, so it’s time to continue calling daily and tell them not to cut key provisions of the For the People Act.

We must insist that the Senate addresses voting rights before they adjourn next week (or extend the session).

#ForThePeopleNow #RecessCanWait

Please call both Senators daily!

Stop the Republican Recall of Governor Newsom

Voter suppression we’re seeing in other states may not be a problem in California. But Republicans are trying to thwart the will of 62% of Californians who voted for Gavin Newsom with a cynical effort to grab power through a recall that they could never win through a general election. All it takes is 50% + 1 to Vote “Yes” on a recall and whichever of the 46 candidates on the ballot that gets the most votes would become governor. Imagine a governor with as little as 10-15% of a very low turnout election replacing an elected Governor with a record of bold reform! The polls are narrowing so we’ll need to step up our outreach and ensure that all of our friends and family make sure to vote when the ballots go out in mid-August. Here’s a Stop the Recall Toolkit to reference and look for specific actions we’re busy planning in next week’s newsletter: texting, canvassing, tabling, phone banking, postcards — even a 27’ banner with a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help hang it!

Check out our event calendar at virtual events and actions and the linktree for example scripts and more.

This is the last week before the Senate plans to go on recess. We need to contact our Senators daily and tell them voting protections can’t wait! We need to see a sense of urgency from our Senators. They should not go on recess while leaving our democracy in danger.

Tell our Senators: Don’t go on vacation until you’ve protected our democracy!

And ask your friends to contact their Senators too- you can find resources for friendbanking at (including some sample scripts for texting a friend!).

Sample Call Script for Sen. Feinstein and for Sen. Padilla:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a California voter from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

I am calling today to make sure Senator [Feinstein/Padilla] understands the urgency of protecting voting rights and passing S. 1, the For the People Act. Any voting rights bills that are negotiated need to keep the provisions of S. 1 intact. And we must pass it now, before the August recess. In fact, there should be no recess until the For the People Act has passed.

Can you tell me if Senator [Feinstein/Padilla] will pledge to end the filibuster and pass S. 1 immediately, and will not go on vacation without protecting our democracy? Thank you.
