This week, people around the globe sought escape from the devastation of Covid in the opening of the Olympic Games. But while the eyes of the world may have been turned toward Tokyo, Covid continued to rear its ugly head, sidelining several athletes. And in the United States Delta continued to spread and cases were on a steep incline particularly among unvaccinated areas of the country. At DemCast, we were pleased to share the compelling argument from California Assemblymember Buffy Wicks about why we must mandate vaccination.
We also remain vigilant about passing the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, our best tools to stop the rampant voter suppression efforts that have become the main platform of the Republican Party. We applaud the appointments of Rep. Liz Cheney’s and Rep. Adam Kinzinger to the January 6th commission, but we know that we must continue to speak truth to all of our elected officials. So we are proud to have published April Edwards and Richard Ojeda‘s letters to their filibuster-hugging senator, Joe Manchin, as well as Edward Smith‘s letter to President Biden.
To round out our week, we shared former veteran David Weissman‘s words of support for the US leaving Afghanistan and frequent contributor Hank Cetola‘s analysis of the numbers that demonstrate exactly why wealthy Americans — we’re talking top 0.1% — need to pay more taxes.
