This week while the world was in the middle of the Tokyo Olympics, here in the US we listened to heartbreaking testimony given to the House Jan. 6 Select Committee by police officers who defended the Capitol against armed insurrectionists. Sadly, most Republicans seemed unmoved, which inspired David Weissman to write about the hypocrisy of Republicans by comparing the hearings of Benghazi committee and the January 6 commission.

Carter Dougherty shared some truths about Wall Street’s private equity barons, and we were proud to publish two important series. Jen Budd courageously wrote about how Border Control agents get away with abusing their power, and Teri Kanefield discussed whether we are already too far down the road to autocracy to be able to save our democracy.
