Last week a jury of his peers declared Derek Chauvin “Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.” And at the same time, the breath in another Black body — a teenage girl in Ohio — was extinguished by a police officer. Nothing can bring back the lives lost to police violence. This week’s photo essay “I Can’t Breathe,” featuring the work of DemCast graphics artist Danielle Eaglewarrior and music by Melvin Myles, reminds us of the shattering number of people who had their lives taken by the police. Another of our frequent authors, Cheryle Johnson, reflected on the experience of watching the video that captured George Floyd’s murder.
Of course, because this is early 21st-century America, plenty of other issues caught our writers’ attention. Frequent contributor and DemCast’s favorite former MAGA David Weissman proposed an outreach program for Democrats to conduct tough conversations with conservatives. If you’re listening Jaime Harrison, just give him a call! Content Director Rena Korb channeled the frustration shared by many parents with the state of public schools in California. And Toby Gialluca helped us celebrate Earth Day with a sobering look at the climate refugees to come.
We hope you will take a moment to catch up on what you missed Last Week in DemCast!
