Susan Collins has Voted with Mitch McConnell 93% of the Time, Still Supports his bid for Continued Leadership of the Senate
Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell’s tenure as Senate Majority Leader has been bad for Mainers. Whether it’s pushing tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate special interests at the expense of everyday Mainers, or his quest to fast-track the appointment of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court while refusing to allow a desperately-needed stimulus bill to comet to a vote, Mainers can’t afford another two years of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Senator Mitch McConnell has worked for the last 35 years to push through an unpopular agenda to eliminate decades-old campaign finance rules, cut taxes for corporations and the rich, and pack the federal courts with judges who ignore legal precedent to erode civil rights.
And since he took the helm as Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell has been on the wrong side of nearly every issue important to Mainers:
- Used the 2017 Republican tax cuts, which gave billions in giveaways to corporate special interests and the one percent at the expense of everyday Mainers, to end the Affordable Care Act (ACA) individual mandate, providing the basis for the current SCOTUS challenge to repeal the ACA, and jeopardizing access to health care for over 100,000 Mainers.
- Exploited the coronavirus stimulus package to give millionaires $135 billion in taxpayer-funded giveaways, and has refused to allow another stimulus bill to come to a vote in fast-tracking the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Coney Barrett.
- Turned the Senate into a legislative graveyard, except for appointments of federal judges hand-picked by the Trump administration.
Despite this, Susan Collins continues to support his agenda, voting with McConnell 93% of the time, and his bid to remain in control of the Senate as Majority Leader. And in return for her loyalty, McConnell has ensured Collins is “well-funded” by McConnell’s network of Republican mega-donors and corporate special interests.
