- TEXT, CALL, WRITE TO FLIP THE WISCONSIN SUPREME COURT
The Wisconsin Supreme Court election has already shattered the record for most expensive state supreme court race in American history… and we still have a full month to go. The Trumpist billionaires and forced birthers behind Daniel Kelly are determined to keep Janet Protasiewicz out of this seat. Let’s push back. This week, we can a) text Wisconsin voters with the Working Families Party Tuesday; b) phonebank with the Wisconsin Democrats Monday through Thursday and Saturday; c) call Black voters with the Bay Area Coalition and the Center for Common Ground on Wednesday; or d) sign up to write letters to progressive voters with Vote Forward. We can always find more ways to help on this master list from Jessica Craven, too!
- NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION TO #STOPCOPCITY THURSDAY
Racial and criminal justice organizations led by Community Movement Builders and Decarcerate Memphis are holding a national day of action on March 9th to stop the Cop City project in Atlanta. There are rallies, marches, teach-ins and vigils scheduled at various locations across the country. Let’s check it out and see if we can attend an event near us, or show our support for the forest defenders in other ways Thursday.
- GROWING THE RANKS OF ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
There’s evidence that voting is habit-forming: ”voting in one election substantially increases the likelihood of voting in the future.” The Environmental Voter Project is capitalizing on that finding to grow the ranks of environmental voters. EVP is holding phonebanks to engage targeted voters in local elections in Georgia, Florida, Arizona, New Hampshire, Louisiana, Nebraska, Alaska, and Colorado. Let’s sign up to make calls.
- MAKE STARBUCKS ANSWER FOR UNION-BUSTING
Starbucks chairman and former CEO Howard Schultz, who has come under heavy criticism for union-busting amidst a nationwide organizing drives at Starbucks locations, has declined to come before the US Senate and testify about his company’s actions. Senator Bernie Sanders, chair of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has scheduled a vote for March 8th on whether to issue a subpoena. If our senators are on the HELP committee, let’s call them and urge them to vote yes.
- RALLY LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS
School boards across the country are seeing takeovers by far right candidates wanting to “protect” our children from learning or reading about race, gender, and inclusivity among other things. Our public schools are only as good as the community that supports them. One way we can let our opinions about the education of our children be heard is by clearly presenting our concerns or ideas to the school board. We can use these tips from the ACLU to do just that: https://www.aclu-wa.org/docs/tips-presenting-school-boards.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- MA: MAKE MASSACHUSETTS WORK FOR IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES
Policymakers and immigrants rights activists are making a renewed push for the passage of the Language Access and Inclusion Act in Massachusetts. This law would dramatically expand the availability of English language resources at the state’s public-facing state agencies, eliminating barriers to state information and services faced by limited English speakers. Let’s use this easy tool from the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition to ask our state-legislators to sponsor the bill.
