Postcard Pizza Party July 8th! And your Calls to Action!

//
26 mins read

Hello Ventura Indivisians,

Our first in-real-life, honest-to-goodness POSTCARD PIZZA PARTY is this week! Yup, this coming Thursday, July 8th, bring yourself out to Santino’s for an hour or two (starting at 11:30am) writing postcards to West Virginians urging them to call Senator Manchin to support the For the People Act. We need to show Congress the overwhelming grassroots support for voting rights.

Our postcard parties are always full of fun and camaraderie!

All the postcard party details here!

After your calls to action – more events and resources!

Your Calls to Action:
We’re on fire and fossil fuel companies are fanning the flames. Now that this “darkness has been exposed to light,” this is our chance. Demand change now!(more info)

The following two actions are dedicated to Lytton, a tiny town in British Columbia, Canada, whose 250 residents experienced temperatures equal to Death Valley’s, before it was consumed by fire. It’s also dedicated to the hundreds of people in normally temperate places who died from a “heat dome” this week and to those who won’t survive this weekend as the heat moves eastward. (great article here)

Contact Joe and tell him to do the job we sent him to do (more info)

Sample letter here. Make it your own.

Contact Joe Biden: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/

Share your letter to Joe with your legislators and tell them to sign the “Fossil-Free Pledge. (more info)

Minimal email script (Make it your own): This week I said “ENOUGH!” I watched news of people dying in their homes from extreme heat and listened to an Exxon lobbyist crow over how he manipulates legislators to stop our government from accomplishing viable progress on climate change to protect his company’s bottom line. I’m aware that my town and my state is as vulnerable as any other to a climate-change catastrophe and that my tax dollars are paying for our government’s failure to address this issue. “Last year, some 22 extreme events — from cyclones and hurricanes to drought — cost the U.S. a combined $95 billion, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Since 1980, overall damage from some 285 weather and climate disasters cost at least $1 billion each, or a total of $1.9 trillion, according to NOAA.”

We know, that with a government so evenly divided, that it only takes a few legislators listening to the science attacks and disinformation campaigns of the fossil fuel industry, to derail the changes we need to urgently.

Sen. [___], I respectfully request you do the following:

  1. Talk to your colleagues who are now known as the #Exxon11Kyrsten SinemaShelley Moore CapitoJohn CornynSteve DainesMarco RubioJohn BarrassoJoe Manchin II,I Jon Tester Chris CoonsMark KellyMaggie Hassan. The people who will die, or lose all they own in the next few years will be constituents of both parties. This is a slow-motion American tragedy, not a partisan one.
  2. Tell Rep. Ro Khanna that you encourage him to invite (or subpoena)  the CEOs of Exxon, Chevron, and other fossil fuel companies to testify before his Environment subcommittee on their climate disinformation campaigns and coordinated attacks on science, and their role in subverting the American Jobs Bill.
  3. If you have not done so already, please sign the “No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge,” and join other legislators who’ve pledged not to take contributions over $200 from oil, gas, and coal industry executives, lobbyists, and PACs and instead prioritize the health of our families, climate, and democracy over fossil fuel industry profits.(Sen. Diane Feinstein has already signed. We did not see Reps. Brownley, Carbajal, or Sen. Padilla on the list.)
  4. Make it known that you’ve closed your door to fossil fuel lobbyists, in whatever guise they appear. They are no friends to your constituents, and even their own shareholders have to breath clean air, drink clean water, and not have their houses burn down.

Here is my letter to President Biden: (copy/paste your letter)

At the end of Pride Month – it’s time to rinse off some of that rainbow-wash. Hey, corporations, do you want to be considered “people?” (more info)

Corporations (think: Walmart, CVS, AT&T) have started adding rainbow colors to their logos on social media, attempting to show support for the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month. But LGBTQ+ activists say the show of solidarity by some companies is just a front since their corporate policies show a different side to their supposed activism. And are accusing them of rainbow-washing.“

Citizens United turned soulless corporations into “people” who can support things, like Pride Month and Juneteenth. Well, it’s time to remind a bunch of CEO’s that there are social rules to being “real people” –  if you say you’re a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, don’t give political donations to homophobes. So easy!

See these companies here and quickly send them an email. (email address and sample letters included)

Call your senators, and make sure your friends and family members call theirs. 75% of Americans say ‘Yes” to S.393 – The Equality Act. (more info)
Even with Trump removed, our LBGTQI+ community still faces harrassment and discrimination that effect their mental, physical and economic wellbeing. Just this year, GOP-controlled legislatures, ignoring the will of 75% of Americans, passed the largest number of repressive anti-LGBTQ+ bills since 2015, when same-sex marriage became legal.

Minimal script for cosponsoring senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to thank Sen. [___] for supporting S.393 – the Equality Act. It’s past time to recognize the essential humanity of all our citizens and remove this last bar to equal treatment of our LGBTQI+ community.

Minimal script for NON-cosponsoring senators: I’m [writing/calling from zip code] today because I want Sen. [___] to represent my views, those of my family, and the majority of Americans, by adding his/her vote to supporting S.393 – the Equality Act. More than 100 faith groups have endorsed this bill, stating that their support is grounded in the religious belief that all people should be able to live free from the discrimination.

Senate cosponsors here. Feinstein and Padilla are both signed on.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
and Senator Padilla:  DC (202) 224-3553, LA (310) 231-4494, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 981-9369, SD (619) 239-3884

It was Groundhog Day for states’ rights and Black voter suppression in the Senate. Call your senators
(more info)
“States’ rights” was the political battle cry that maintained and expanded slavery, as our country itself expanded. It was heard again in the Senate to reject S.1 -“For the People Act,” in favor of a wave of new state laws being described as the return of Jim-CrowSusan Collins (R-ME): “S. 1 would take away the rights of people in each of the 50 states to determine which election rules work best for their citizens.”Minimal script:I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to know that I’m furious that that Republicans filibustered debate on the S.1 For the People Act yesterday. To prevent even having a discussion about voting rights is outrageous. Americans know that having 50 different sets of election rules, some of which are blatantly discriminatory, isn’t fair and want election reform by wide margins. Congress ignores this at their peril.

[If Dem add:] Democrats must do anything and everything necessary to pass this bill. Including voting to abolish or reform the filibuster.

[If GOP add] Shame on the Senator for putting party over our democracy. I will be encouraging the Democrats to abolish the filibuster to pass this bill.Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
and Senator Padilla:  DC (202) 224-3553, LA (310) 231-4494, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 981-9369, SD (619) 239-3884

Call again! Call your senators to vote “YES” on UFW-supported H.R. 1603 – the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, a long-delayed “thank you” for the essential workers who bring us our food. (more info)Farmworkers need immigration reform so they can work in the fields without fear.” Fear – hardwired into the fruits and vegetables we enjoy quietly in our homes. Do better, America. This is a problem we can solve.

Minimal Script: Hello, I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to vote “YES” on H.R. 1603 – the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which supports a path to citizenship for aspiring Americans working in agriculture, young aspiring Americans, and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. Thank you.

Extra credit – If you haven’t already called on H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2021, another UFW priority bill, please do so now. Scripts and information here. Or do it again!

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Keep calling! Call VP Harris and ask her to rule the filibuster unconstitutional (more info)
Minimal Script: I’m [calling/writing] to ask VP Harris, as presiding officer of the Senate, to rule that the filibuster is unconstitutional. Its 60-vote supermajority requirement for the enactment of general legislation is in violation of Article V, the 17th Amendment and the constitutional presumption of majority rule as prescribed in the Constitution. VP Harris: Email : http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/, Comments: 202-456-1111, Switch Board: 202-456-1414, TTY/TTD:  202-456-6213, Letters/postcards: The White House, Office of the Vice President,1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20500

Tell your senators that we expect them to make changes now!(more info)
Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to let Sen. [___] know that I’ve just finished (calling/writing) Vice President Harris to ask her to rule the filibuster unconstitutional. The American public is done with the Senate’s dysfunctional legislative graveyard. This procedure must either be abolished, or substantially reformed, as it’s anti-democratic for a minority to be able to permanently block bi-partisan House legislation, especially bills related to basic democracy, like voting access and equal rights. I’m asking [him/her] to immediately engage in collaboration to reform the Senate from the legislative bottleneck it is now to a functioning body, which may include time limits, the “talking filibuster”, and majority-vote carve-outs for bills that reform and protect democracy.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
