The Democratic Insider: July 4, 2021

This past week in Jefferson City the Legislative Democratic Caucuses stood their ground and protected women’s reproductive health from the draconian anti-birth control measure attached to the Federal Reimbursement Allowance.

The FRA has been bipartisan for over three decades. It is a necessary part of the state budget, without it the state cannot function. In an attempt to keep important family planning options from women and families, the Missouri Republicans were willing to bring our state to the brink of financial collapse.

There were two measures up for a vote, SB 1, the clean FRA bill, and HR 2, the defunding of Planned Parenthood. HR 1 sucessfully passed in the final hours and HR 2 failed due to the Senate not coming back to approve it.

Thank you to the Missouri Democratic legislators for protecting women and families’ right to healthcare options.

Missouri was one of the 11 states that reported a +1,000 decrease in unemployment assistance claims this week. Compared to the week of June 12th, there have been less layoffs in manufacturing, retail and construction jobs across the state which resulted in 1,239 less claims for Missouri workers. Since President Biden and Vice President Harris have come into office over 3 million jobs have been created across the country.

This week was the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion of 1969. On June 28th police discriminately raided Stonewall Inn, a well-known LGBTQ+ bar in New York City. These demonstrations were the first calls for LGBTQ+ rights in modern history and they again continued into the 52nd anniversary.

Senators Hawley and Blunt have once again harmed Missouri when they voted NAY on moving forward with debate on the For The People Act, a sweeping expansion of voting rights and campagin finance law changes. FTPA also made gerrymandering, adjusting and redrawing district lines to keep power, harder for Republicans to manipulate. It is not necessarily a suprise Hawley and Blunt voted no, but no less a desservice to the Missouri citizens.

Speaker Pelosi announced the creation of a bipartisan Select Committee to investigate the Jan 6th insurrection egged on by the former President.

The creation of a Jan 6th commission previously failed due to complete denial from congressional Republicans. Thankfully, we have the leadership that believes in the truth and supports our police and first responders who were viciously attacked during the insurrection. One Republican, Liz Cheney, who has been ostracized by her own caucus for telling the truth, was appointed to the Select Committee. Republican Minority Leader McCarthy has threatened any Republican member with retaliation if they participate – once again, the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol is being downplayed by GOP lies.

The Trump Organization and former CFO were charged with 15 felony counts in connection to a tax scheme started in 2005. 2005!!! For 15 years, 4 while he was President, Donald Trump’s organization ripped off and lied to the American people. His lies are now catching up to him.

To help us elect more leaders like President Biden who will do everything they can to get America Back on Track, please make a contribution.
