We thought our prior action newsletter would be the last one of the Evil Empire, but we need to let you know about something important that can’t wait, right here in California. Please take action for renters in our state and get set for the Flight-Risk-in-Chief to leave town – and remember, we can make change when we act together!
Keep Tenants Housed in the Pandemic \Deadline: NOW – Tenants across California are losing their homes during the pandemic. The state’s Ellis Act lets landlords evict long-term tenants – usually in rent-controlled areas, and even if they’re paying their rent on time – so they can convert these properties into condos or even Airbnb rentals. Neither the existing statewide eviction moratorium nor a proposed expanded moratorium, AB 15, protect tenants from being evicted under the Ellis Act. Tell your legislators we need legislation providing (1) immediate help – a moratorium on Ellis Act evictions, and (2) long-term reform – a 5-year holding period to keep speculators from buying property for the purpose of immediately flipping it by evicting existing tenants. Read more in our article, but take action TODAY – the deadline to pass a new bill is January 31!
What to say: My name is _____, I live in (assemblymember’s name) district and I’m a member of Indivisible East Bay. I am calling to urge _____ to protect tenants in California. The Ellis Act is being used to evict tenants, including low-income, elderly, or disabled people, even if they’re paying rent. It’s not fair to ask people to leave their homes, for no fault of their own, in the middle of a pandemic while a statewide stay-at-home order is in place. I’m asking ____ to support legislation imposing a moratorium on Ellis Act evictions, and also imposing a 5-year holding period and civil penalties for violators.

We Could Not Make This Up
Martin Luther King, Jr., Day events: Prez-Elect Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, volunteered at a hunger relief organization in Philly. VP-Elect Kamala Harris resigned from the Senate saying “Thank you, California.” Practically-Out-The-Door-in-Chief said that, like every day, he was going to “make many calls and have many meetings” – he also proclaimed how great his administration had been for communities of color, and hinted that protests against any racism that might exist shouldn’t, ya know, turn angry. Oh, and, the story broke that his administration gave $850,000 of COVID relief to anti-vax organizations. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, kiddo.
