Reproductive rights: recap of June All Members Meeting & more

Strength in numbers: it was great to gather at the June 26 Indivisible East Bay All Members Meeting, just days after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, to talk about what we can do now to protect reproductive rights. Dr. Miranda Yaver spoke on the role of abortion rights in in Ohio’s Senate race, and why it’s important to help elect Tim Ryan (D). Our reproductive rights expert, Ann Daniels, discussed what the Supreme Court said in Dobbs, why it’s messed up in so many ways, and what we can do now to keep fighting for reproductive rights for all. We also took direct action together on reproductive rights. Did you miss the meeting? Fill out this form and we’ll send you the recording. Most important – you didn’t miss out on taking action, keep reading to find out what you can do!

Action: Protect Reproductive Rights

It’s the new deadly plague: the Supreme Court’s long-dreaded decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade and Casey. (In)Justice Alito’s majority opinion says that abortion isn’t protected by the Constitution, and returns the issue to the states – over half of which have or will soon have laws outlawing abortion in whole or in part, including so-called “trigger bans.” Abortion is statutorily legal in California and this is one of the most “supportive” states in the US. But even here, access can be hard, especially for low income women and women of color; and if women lack rights anywhere, women are not free. We’re all furious – but there’s hope, and we can’t be frozen by anger or fear. Join us in action: lobby for state and federal legislation, donate to abortion support funds, protest, find out about corporations that are doing the right thing. For all this and more, check out our article (and keep checking – we’ll update it to keep up with how fast things are moving and new options for action!).

We Could Not Make This Up

Get yer popcorn here! Still months ‘til the Oscars but we’ve got contenders! Possible Best Actress: Sarah Huckabee Sanders, for her immortal Dumb and Dumbest speech the day after the Uvalde shooting: “We will make sure that when a kid is in the womb, they’re as safe as they are in a classroom …” Strong challenger: Marjorie “gonna hold my own committee hearings” T. Greene, in The Girl With $hit For Brains! For Best Actor, the Ketchup-Thrower-in-Chief is a double threat, with star turns in the year’s two epic tragicomedies Driving Miss Donnie and Donnie and the Beast! And in a small but key supporting role: Gen. Mike Flynn, in Close Encounters of the Fifth, and Fifth, and Fifth Kind. Stay tuned, folks – sequels coming next week!
