Last week in Michigan, armed protesters flooded the State Capitol in an effort to threaten State Lawmakers into a false “reopening” that puts both lives and the economy at dire risk.
The movement to force states to recklessly ignore the health, economic, and political reality of COVID-19 is driven by a narrow band of corporate special interests who stand to reap a short-term financial and political windfall, whatever the costs to human health and the economy. In Michigan, Betsy DeVos and her family sponsored the recent protests — they are the same ones who have delivered a huge money advantage to their favored legislative candidates across the state.
This is unacceptable. That’s why we are proud to partner with Arena to launch the #DefeatDeVos Fund to flip the Michigan House.
In April, the Michigan House Republicans reported having nearly $4M in the bank — a massive advantage over the House Democrats, who have about $1M. This difference is the largest head start for them in an election year in at least two decades.
Unless we catch up, our candidates won’t be able to compete. Our candidates have significantly more donors — but a tiny number of wealthy DeVos-linked interests are out-raising them. It’s time to reverse this trend.
