Take a moment to watch this video. The line “I never expected to say I’d be ‘scared sh*tless’ on CNN, but that’s how I feel,” has been ringing in my head since I heard it.
Because I am scared too.
State legislatures were the center of the coup attempt. They’re still the most powerful looming threat to our democracy. And we see what’s coming.
In 2020, Trump wanted lawmakers to overrule their state’s voters and appoint rogue electors to steal the Electoral College. The team at Future Now, working with lawmakers to protect democracy saw it up close. But the Trumpists were untested and nonstrategic. That’s changed.
In 2021, radical right legislatures are advancing bills to let themselves overturn an election if the results don’t go their way. Trump-appointed Supreme Court Justices said they believe state legislatures have the power to overturn the will of the people.
I left office because I believed the frontlines of democracy were being overlooked: state legislatures. I never conceived that state lawmakers would actually dismantle democracy. But I also didn’t foresee that we could build such a potent community to do something about it.
This year, even as people’s energy has waned, the threat has gotten bigger.
But I believe the efforts we’ve built at Future Now and Future Now Fund is uniquely positioned to win the fight.
This threat is real and big, so I don’t want to just throw in a
