6 mins read

Today, May 7th, millions of people and over 50 national organizations, including Indivisible, will take online action and demand Congress support an Essential Worker Bill of Rights. This Bill of Rights would cover nurses, health and home care workers, domestic workers, truckers, janitors, grocery workers, farm workers, warehouse workers child care workers and transit workers. If we’re loud enough, we can help ALL #ProtectEssentialWorkers. Join in!

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞!

Action #1 – Call your House Rep.

Minimal call scripts to House members: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___]  to release a bold & comprehensive relief bill that includes an Essential Workers Bill of Rights that includes fair compensation. This would include hazard pay, real job protections, paid sick leave, child care workplace protections, health care, and that these protections be given to all working people, no matter their immigration or contractor status.

More script if you want it: These workers risk their lives at work every day to allow the rest of us to stay home.  These are our community and family members, and they all should be treated with respect. The impacts of this COVID-19 crisis on low-wage frontline workers and Black, Brown, Asian-American, AAPI, Indigenous, and migrant communities go even deeper. We need Congress to provide relief for the duration of the crisis and recovery for all workers and communities.

Action #2 – Email your House Rep.

Minimal email scripts to House members: Right now, millions of essential workers are out on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis saving lives, delivering necessities, sanitizing public spaces, and staffing essential businesses.

Yet instead of giving these heroes what they need to keep our country functioning, essential workers are being placed in high-risk conditions without appropriate equipment, safety standards, or job protections. Many essential workers don’t even make a living wage!

You have a HUGE opportunity coming up to add fair compensation, real job protections, paid sick leave, workplace protections, health care, and more to the next economic recovery package. The next bill must include an Essential Worker Bill of Rights that provides workers with:

1. Health and safety protections;
2. Robust premium compensation;
3. Protections for collective bargaining agreements;
4. Truly universal paid sick leave and family and medical leave;
5. Whistleblower protections;
6. An end to worker misclassification;
7. Health care security;
8. Childcare support;
9. Treat workers as experts; and
10. Holds corporations accountable for meeting their employer responsibilities.

Please support the Essential Worker Bill of Rights in the next economic recovery package! Lives depend on it.

⚡ Dear Congress, essential workers are our path out of this pandemic! We need an Essential Workers’ Bill of Rights #EWBOR to ensure they have health, safety, job, and compensation protections. #ProtectEssentialWorkers

⚡ Right now, millions of essential workers are on the #COVID19 frontlines saving lives, delivering necessities, sanitizing spaces, and staffing businesses. They aren’t just numbers in the news. They’re our friends and family, and they deserve better. #ProtectEssentialWorkers #EWBOR

⚡ The impacts of this COVID-19 crisis on low-wage frontline workers and Black, Brown, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, and migrant communities run deep. We need Congress to provide relief for the duration of the crisis and recovery for all workers and communities.

⚡ As part of the next #COVID-19 relief package, Congress has a moral responsibility to #ProtectEssentialWorkers and their families. Give them the compensation and job protections they deserve! #EWBOR

⚡ All stimulus worker protections must be inclusive of all working people, no matter their immigration or contractor status. These are our community and family members, and they all should be treated with respect.

⚡ Not one more. Essential workers are dying from the coronavirus as Congress negotiates the next relief package. There is no time to waste. We need an Essential Workers Bill of Rights.

Action #4 – Post a video!

This is what it looks like when a city does it.

This is what it looks like with one person.

Both are powerful tributes. Add your voice or make it a family affair.

:zap: Take a video of yourself clapping for Essential Workers and post it on social media or by using this tool: https://indivisible.soapboxx.us/prompt-single/ewbor
