Annie “Mamá” Garcia is not only intent on running against 3-term Republican incumbent John Cornyn for his U.S. Senate seat in the November 3 general election, but she is walking 420 miles in the primary with the hopes of getting her there.
In protest of “all the ways in which John Cornyn has hurt Texas and helped himself”, Annie is walking the equivalent of 16 marathons in 14 days.
“It’s a toss-up between Cornyn and Mitch McConnell over who has done more to hurt Texans. Pick an issue, and see where he’s been on it. Healthcare? Fought to repeal the ACA. The 40,000 Americans that die and 100,000 injured every year at the end of a barrel? He has earned his A+ grade from the NRA. Enabling a racist President and policies that are separating families and killing kids in our custody? Check.”
Garcia is slated to leave from Houston on February 16, and will end at the site of the recent mass shooting targeting Hispanics at the Wal-Mart in El Paso.
“I’ve been asked if I am capable of walking more than a marathon a day for 2 weeks. But my mama always says that action talks and bull crap walks. Well, in this case, the action is walking and I am going to show Texans that where there is a will, there is a way.”
The Run Annie Run campaign invites other fed-up Texans to join her, both in real life and in spirit, and can use her platform to explain in 280 characters why John Cornyn does not deserve their votes.
“I am not a politician and it’s been incredibly hard to be in this race. But I believe that there are enough Texans that are just as fed up as I am and are just as scared of what the world will look like in their kids’ eyes. I want to be the candidate that I would go the extra mile to vote for. If I can walk 420 miles, maybe there are enough other people out there who will be motivated to get themselves to a remote polling location where their registration is questioned, wait in line after a long day’s work, deal with a 20th-century voting machine, and cast their vote for someone who also knows that life should not be this hard, and is pissed- and crazy- enough to do something about it.”

Protestando en contra de “todas las formas en que John Cornyn ha lastimado a Texas y se ha aprovechado en su beneficio”, Annie va a caminar el equivalente de 16 maratones en 14 días.
“Las decisiones que John Cornyn toma en Washington están literalmente matando gente. Carlos Hernández, por ejemplo, vino a nuestro país buscando refugio y murió por una gripa, en el piso de su hielera. Tuvo fiebre y cuerpo yacía en el suelo, mientras otro hombre, un hijo más, estaba encerrado en la misma habitación. Igualmente, 22 personas inocentes murieron en agosto, mientras hacían sus compras para el regreso a clases, especialmente al ser blanco por su origen étnico. ¡Ésta no es mi Texas! ¡Tenemos que recuperar nuestra voz y nuestra democracia!”
Annie “Mamá García va a partir de Houston el 16 de febrero y recorrerá Texas, pasando por Harlingen, Brownsville, McAllen y Laredo antes de llegar a San Antonio y Austin. Ella finalizará su recorrido en el lugar del reciente tiroteo en contra de inmigrantes latinos en el Wal-Mart de El Paso.
“Me preguntaron si era capaz de caminar más de una maratón al día, por dos semanas. Me enfoco en Carlos, “el Goyito” a su familia, y lo que le tomó a él para llegar a nuestra frontera, y los incontables casos como el suyo. Ellos son mi inspiración y me darán la fuerza, y la convicción de que no estoy sola en mi indignación.”
