Last night, bombshell reports show that former National Security Advisor John Bolton—who has already said he is willing to testify—would say that Donald Trump told him directly that military aid was withheld to pressure Ukraine into interfering in the 2020 election.
This game-changer puts an enormous amount of pressure on Senate Republicans to call firsthand witnesses like allow like Bolton to testify in the impeachment trial.
Here’s what folks are saying:
CNN: Bolton Bombshell Undercuts Trump Impeachment Defense
The Washington Post: John Bolton’s Bombshell Gives The GOP A Glimpse Of Its Nightmare Scenario
Sen. Mitt Romney: “I think it’s increasingly likely that other Republicans will join those of us who think we should hear from John Bolton.”
Sen. Susan Collins: “The reports about John Bolton’s book strengthen the case for witnesses and have prompted a number of conversations among my colleagues.”
Senior GOP Aide: “The odds of deposition for new witnesses is certainly rising dramatically.”
Mark Murray, NBC News: “Can’t overstate how damaging the Bolton news is to Trump’s lawyers — as well as to GOP senators who don’t want to hear from Bolton or new witnesses.”
Maggie Haberman, The New York Times: “Senators feel blindsided.”
Byron York, Washington Examiner: “Bolton has already changed the game…Public needs to see it now.”
Dana Bash, CNN: “The feel up here is different today than it was just a couple of days ago when the kind of sense was that this was a kind of train heading right for a potential final vote without witnesses.”
