Ten ways Trump and Republicans gutted train safety regulations

The hypocrisy is rich. After gutting train safety regulations, Republicans now complain about accidents.

We decided to take a ‘look at some of the transportation safety rules sidelined under Trump‘ and follow the money from the railroad lobby to Republicans responsible for transport safety regulations.

SPOILER ALERT:
Trump appointed Ron Batory to head the Federal Railroad Administration. He was the president of Conrail, a service provider for the CSX and Norfolk Southern freight railroads. “His confirmation is a win for railroad safety and I expect him to have an impact,” said Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.). – WNYC

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) — the Senate’s third largest recipient of rail industry campaign cash — pushed to repeal the electronic braking rule outright. – Lever News

Rail Companies Blocked Safety Rules Before Ohio Derailment. Norfolk Southern helped convince government officials to repeal brake rules — and corporate lobbyists watered down hazmat safety regs. – The Lever

Trump made reducing regulations a priority

“Trump has made reducing regulations a priority, seeing many rules as an unnecessary burden on industry. Last month he tweeted that his administration “has terminated more UNNECESSARY Regulations, in just 12 months, than any other Administration has terminated during their full term in office… The good news is he wrote THERE IS MUCH MORE TO COME!”

The Transportation Department declined repeated AP requests since November for an on-the-record interview with Secretary Elaine Chao (Mitch McConnell’s wife) discuss safety regulations. The department’s position has been that it can reduce regulation without undermining safety.” – WNYC
