The hardworking folks at Water For Grassroots have created a new tool that has the potential to be a gamechanger.
Millions of people visit Florida every year from other states, and now you can add a little civic engagement to your vacation or family visit. Â
HelpFloridaRegister.org makes it easy for visitors to Florida (& residents) to connect with community groups doing voter registration. The site’s Spanish version is at RegistremosaFlorida.org, or PRVotaEnFlorida.org.Â
Florida will play a key role in 2020—and Florida’s elections are often decided by very narrow margins. In 2018, the election for governor was decided by 30,000 votes, or 0.4% of more than 8 million ballots cast.
Today more than 3 million Floridians are eligible to vote but are unregistered. If you live in Florida or will be visiting there in 2019 or 2020, you can volunteer to register new voters.
The organizations listed on the website all welcome your help. They’re working to make Florida a more fair state, overcoming a long history of discrimination by expanding voter registration in under-represented communities.
If we can get a small fraction of Florida’s visitors to spend some time registering voters, in a state where elections are famously close, it could shape the outcome next year.
