- SIGN UP FOR A NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION SUMMIT
Field Team 6, whose mission is “Register Democrats, Save the World”, is creating, hosting, presenting the first-ever, all day, national voter registration summit on Thursday, March 16 from 11am-8pm ET / 8am-5pm PT. The summit brings together the best and brightest minds, from elected officials to tech leaders to grassroots organizers and so much more. Here is a link to see the very exciting and newsworthy schedule. Let’s sign up for the summit and share the link with others who could benefit.
- REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) have filed a bill that will ensure that medical records regarding abortion or pregnancy loss will remain private and can be released only with the patient’s consent. Let’s tell our two senators to co-sponsor S.323 – Secure Access for Essential Reproductive (SAFER) Health Act, and let’s tell our representative to file companion legislation in the House.
- FIGHT THE PRISON-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
The authors of the 13th Amendment left a loophole, allowing slavery to be imposed as punishment for a crime. This gives constitutional sanction to our abusive prison labor system. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA) are leading the fight at the federal level to #EndTheException and put an end to this, having introduced the Abolition Amendment in Congress. There are also as many as a dozen efforts pushing to end involuntary servitude exceptions at the state level. Let’s join the campaign and tell our members of Congress to support the Abolition Amendment, along with pushing our state legislatures.
- NO RETURN TO FAMILY DETENTION
The Biden administration is reportedly considering going back to the Trump-era policy of detaining migrant families who cross the border illegally. Let’s contact the White House and let them know we voted against this in 2020 and we never want to see it happen again, and let our members of Congress know we want them to convey the same message to the President. - ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
A bill introduced in Congress by Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragan (D-CA-44) would, if enacted, create a grant program giving priority to low-income communities and communities of color that apply for clean energy microgrid grants. These 100% clean energy microgrids would power hospitals, grocery stores, community centers, public safety facilities, and other critical infrastructure in the event of an extreme weather disaster or power shut-off. Let’s tell our House Rep to co-sponsor H.R.891—Energy Resilient Communities Act, and let’s tell our Senators to file companion legislation in the Senate.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- ALL: PRESERVE VOTING RIGHTS AT THE STATE LEVEL
As President Biden acknowledged in his trip to Selma this weekend, attacks on our right to vote continue to increase. The Brennan Center has tracked bills introduced by state legislatures that if passed would further restrict people’s access to the ballot box. Let’s check out their work here and then follow up by asking our state legislators if any anti-voting rights bills are being considered in our state, so we can organize in opposition to them. Note: Some blue states are actually trying to expand voting rights, as red states are contracting them. - MA: MAKE MASSACHUSETTS A SANCTUARY STATE
While Massachusetts’ Supreme Judicial Court have ruled that state court officers don’t have the authority to arrest someone suspect of being in the US illegally if that person is not facing criminal charges, the state has never fully codified sanctuary status. Advocates have re-introduced the Safe Communities Act (SD 1937 and HD 2459), which would end state and local involvement in civil immigrant enforcement and increase immigrant access to court and police protection. Let’s use this tool from the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition to urge our legislators to cosponsor the bill, and ask Governor Healey to publicly urge its passage.
