We need to fill you in on everything that happened this week, so let’s jump right in.
The Big Scoop
I don’t know if you feel it too, but there is an energy among Ohioans that I haven’t seen recently. For years, the Republicans in Ohio have been pulling the strings behind the scenes, manipulating the rules to benefit their big money interests at the detriment of everyday Ohioans. Whether it’s taking taxpayer dollars from public schools and giving it to private schools or taking away women’s rights to control their bodies, I think they finally took it one step too far.
And now, something is in the air. The years of Republican absurdity has ignited a fire among Democrats who are ready to do something and take back our state. Buckle up, y’all!
Despite everything going on, signature collection to put reproductive rights on the ballot is still moving along, and Ohio Democrats have collected 53,000 signatures from across the state. Through all of the chaos, we are still showing the GOP that we won’t go back.
Read below to see how you can get involved in the fight for our rights.
Be sure to tell your friends and family that Ohio will have an August 8th primary this year and State Issue 1, a GOP-power grab, will be on the ballot. Issue 1 would effectively eliminate citizen-led ballot initiatives in Ohio. Republicans are pulling out all the stops to prevent Ohioans from having their voices heard as these GOP politicians attack abortion rights, labor rights and Ohioans’ right to fair representation.
The August election presents an existential threat to the many progressive causes we all hold dear, including our ongoing fight to codify reproductive rights into the constitution. We must turn out our base and WIN on August 8th. In the wise words of Tim Gunn, it’s time to make it work.
Ohio Democrats have proudly teamed up with the One Person, One Vote” Coalition and we are surging full steam ahead in our Get Out The Vote efforts for the August Special. At this point we’ve trained 96 volunteer canvassing leaders and had 32 callers join us for our inaugural phonebank last night!
Though we’re off to a great start, we can’t get complacent with so much at stake. We still need all hands on deck to turn out Ohioans to vote NO in August! Here’s how you can GOTV with us:
The most urgent need is identifying canvassing volunteer leads throughout the state. If you are willing to consistently knock two shifts a week and train volunteers to knock doors, go ahead and sign up for a Volunteer Leadership Training! You only need to attend one training to get started.
If you can’t commit to hosting two canvassing shifts per week as a volunteer but still want to knock doors, please sign up using the canvassing interest form! A volunteer leader from your area will reach out to you shortly to get you plugged into their canvassing efforts.
If you’re unable to canvas and would rather call voters to get out the word about the August special election, sign up for one of our phonebanks! After attending a training you will be ready to make calls at any time that fits your schedule.
Sprinkle on Some Fun
Ohio Democrats are looking forward to gathering on Saturday, July 15th, and we’re thrilled that activist, reproductive rights champion, and former President of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards will be joining the event!
Tickets are ON SALE NOW. We hope you will join us for a fun afternoon with our Democratic stars!
Add Some NUTS
This week, JP Mandel, oh sorry, I mean JD Vance already made his endorsement in the Ohio GOP Senate Primary.
Now you may be thinking, “But that election isn’t for 528 days, 8 hours, 57 minutes and 52 seconds!” And you would be right! And the primary for the 2024 election will likely be in March of 2024. AND some of the most anticipated members of the GOP haven’t even joined the race yet.
So why would Vance endorse so early in the race? Vance says he wants his party to avoid the nasty, expensive and sometimes out-of-control GOP Senate primary he was involved in last year. Bad news, J.D. The Ohio Republican Senate primary is already the messiest primary in the country.
In case you missed it, outlets across the state are taking note of the “bloody fight” ahead for Ohio’s Senate seat.
The “family fight” in Ohio has already been called one of the “messiest, “most expensive” and “bruising” primary battles in the country. As more politicians and outside groups get involved, the infighting grows and more gasoline is thrown on the dumpster fire.
The politicians in this race are more interested in attacking one another than focusing on the issues that matter most to Ohioans.
No matter who emerges from this bloody fight, it’s clear they will be bruised, battered, and out of touch with Ohioans’ values.
Until Next Time
