The Ohio Scoop is your weekly political fix, filled with the most up-to-date information about Ohio Democrats and everything happening on the campaign trail here in Ohio. We’re here so you can get your political scoop, all in one place.
If you’re new to the list, welcome. You were added because you are one of Ohio Democrats’ best supporters. For those of you who are returning, welcome back.
We need to fill you in on everything that happened this week, so let’s jump right in.
State Issue 1 will officially be on the ballot in the August 8th primary. Issue 1, a GOP-power grab, would effectively eliminate citizen-led ballot initiatives in Ohio. Republicans are pulling out all the stops to prevent Ohioans from having their voices heard as these GOP politicians attack abortion rights, labor rights and Ohioans’ right to fair representation.
The effort is reportedly being bankrolled by billionaire Richard Uihlein. Uihlein has a long history of donating millions to out-of-touch causes and candidates and attempting to buy elections.
This August election presents an existential threat to the many progressive causes we all hold dear, including our ongoing fight to codify reproductive rights into the constitution. We must turn out our base and WIN on August 8th.
The good news is that many partners across the state have banded together in opposition to this attack on our rights. Ohio Democrats are part of the “One Person, One Vote” Coalition which is dedicated to voting NO in August.
And there are numerous ways to get involved:
The most urgent need is identifying as many canvassing volunteer leads throughout the state as possible. If you are willing to consistently knock two shifts a week and train volunteers to knock doors, go ahead and sign up for a Volunteer Leadership Training! You only need to attend one training to get started.
If you can’t commit to hosting two canvassing shifts per week as a volunteer but still want to knock doors, please sign up using the canvassing interest form! A volunteer leader from your area will reach out to you shortly to get you plugged into their canvassing efforts.
If you’re unable to canvas and would rather call voters to get out the word about the August special election, sign up for one of our phonebanks! After attending a training you will be ready to make calls at any time that fits your schedule.
Reproductive Rights
If Republicans think their efforts to throw a wrench in everything by reinstating a shady August primary election might slow down our work, they’re wrong. If anything, the Republican madness has ignited a fire among Democrats all over the state.
Despite everything, signature collection to put reproductive rights on the ballot is still moving along, and Ohio Democrats have collected 53,000 signatures from across the state. Through all of the chaos, we are still showing the GOP that we won’t go back.
So What’s Next?
Over the next 90 days, Ohio Dems are committed to knocking over 500,000 doors and making 135,000 calls to educate base Democratic voters and turn them out to vote “NO” on August 8th.
We have an immediate funding gap of just over $350,000 to complete our goals.
