GOP-controlled Tennessee state house expels Black lawmakers Justin Jones and Justin Pearson for demanding gun safety – The Guardian

How are organizers responding to this ‘political lynching‘ to silence demands for gun safety reforms? What five things you can do to help?

Podcast interview with Murray, Founder of the Newtown Action Alliance in which she explains:
– Working with survivors of gun violence to create a sea change in the dialogue about guns
– Role of revenue from the sales of weapons of war in lobbying for relaxed gun laws
– Marketing of assault weapons to young people
– Need for individuals to speak up to their elected officials about the need for an assault weapon ban
– Lunch lobby sessions to urge Congress and other elected officials to act

Know the facts! Researchers have estimated that if we still had a federal assault weapons ban, we would see 70% fewer mass shooting deaths. The time is now for an Assault Weapons Ban. Call your federal legislators today! #TheTimeIsNow #AssaultWeaponsBan #BanAssaultWeapons #AWB

Naked MAGA racism

“The naked racism of Tennessee Republicans in expelling two Black legislators but not a white legislator for identical conduct in protesting gun deaths of schoolchildren has removed any ambiguity about the racial animus of MAGA extremism. One commentator described the events in the Tennessee legislature as the birth of “the New Civil Rights Movement.” Because that second birth occurred under the scourge of gun violence directed at children, the merger of those movements will be unstoppable. We witnessed two powerful voices emerge in Tennessee on Thursday. They will become national leaders in a movement that will attract new constituencies to the civil rights, anti-gun movement.” – The Tipping Point

Newtown Action Alliance

Newtown Action Alliance is a national grassroots organization formed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. It aims to achieve the steady and continuous reduction of gun violence through legislative and cultural changes. Since 20 children and six educators were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School, it has worked unapologetically for over a decade to pass the assault weapons ban legislation. After 30 years of inaction, the 117th House of Representatives finally passed the ban last year but the 117th Senate failed to act and now more children and educators have been killed.

TWO BLACK DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVES FROM TENNESSEE ARE EXPELLED FOR SUPPORTING GUN CONTROL
GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION MOVEMENT CALLS FOR CONTINUOUS NATIONAL SCHOOL WALKOUTS UNTIL LAWMAKERS PASS LIFESAVING GUN LAWS

NEWTOWN, CT: The following joint statement from _____ gun violence prevention organizations and allies was released after an unprecedented expulsion of three elected state representatives in Tennessee.

“Yesterday, the authoritarian Republican Majority of the Tennessee House of Representatives beholden to the gun lobby, unjustly expelled two black Democratic Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson while sparing the white Representative Gloria Johnson, for standing with students and their families who were demanding action to end gun violence after three children and three educators were killed by a shooter with an assault weapon 10 days ago in Covenant School in Nashville. Representative Gloria Johnson was asked why she wasn’t, she said “It may have something to do with the color of our skin”.

We cannot stay silent while our democracy and our lives are on the line.

We, the undersigned groups, call for continuous #GenerationLockdown #EndGunViolence school walkouts across the nation and urge their educators, parents, and communities to support them. We also call on school administrators and school boards to refrain from retaliation against students and staff for participating in the walkouts.

THE TIME IS NOW for all Americans to stand up and demand change to keep our children safe in our schools, homes, and streets. Guns are now the number one killer of American children and teens. Students are no longer waiting for permission to demand that their lawmakers take action to keep them safe from gun violence.  Lawmakers on all levels of government must act urgently to pass a set of bold, comprehensive gun laws to dramatically reduce gun deaths and injuries in all of our communities.”
