Check your flood risk from global warming with this free app

Sea levels rise with global warming. A Republican-packed Supreme Court just crippled the EPA increasing your risk from flooding. See if you’ll stay dry.

“With the fight against climate change slowed, advocates say, sea level rise and weather extremes such as hotter wildfires and more severe droughts are likely to continue. “The problem is this: They closed down administrative agencies’ ability to regulate, and then they send the questions over to Congress where we are blockaded by the filibuster and where all the big, dark polluter money that they let into the political system holds sway,” said Senator Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)”. – PBS

Republicans deny global warming. “DeSantis has not addressed the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is real and caused by the burning of fossil fuels, facts that a majority of Republicans in Congress, for example, deny are true as well.” – American Independent

Judge for yourself. Enter your address in this app to see what happens when water levels rise from 1-6 feet using data from NOAA. The simulation below shows the impact of flooding on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. Underwater golf anyone?

Coastal cities flooding

“Projections of sea level rise have put a countdown on several coastal cities. A new study shows that the combination of coastal subsidence and sea level rise acts like a welcome mat for water. Using satellite data, the researchers measured subsidence rates in 99 coastal cities around the world. They found that most are sinking faster than sea levels are rising. In many cities, such as Manila in the Philippines, Tampa in Florida, and Alexandria in Egypt, this means coastal flooding will become an issue much sooner than predicted by models of sea level rise alone.” – Who What Why

Florida GOP Gov. DeSantis denies science as state faces climate change-fueled disasters

Luigi Guadarrama, the political director of the Sierra Club’s Florida chapter, said in an interview with the American Independent Foundation that DeSantis’ support for so-called resiliency programs “makes him seem as if he’s got environmental policies. But climate change is something around which there is scientific consensus. We’re not seeing a whole lot of common sense in his policies. He tends to toss aside serious ideas about climate change as just ‘left-wing politics,’ not expert opinions from scientists.” – American Independent

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

This dataset was created as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management’s efforts to create an online mapping viewer depicting potential sea level rise and its associated impacts on the nation’s coastal areas. The purpose of the mapping viewer is to provide coastal managers and scientists with a preliminary look at sea level rise and coastal flooding impacts. The viewer is a screening-level tool that uses nationally consistent data sets and analyses. Data and maps provided can be used at several scales to help gauge trends and prioritize actions for different scenarios. The purpose of this dataset is to show potential sea level rise inundation of 1- 6 ft above current Mean Higher High Water (MHHW) for the area. Metadata. For additional information or questions, contact the NOAA Office for Coastal Management.

How this Global Warming Flooding app was designed

This app was designed by DemLabs and Florida Keys Dems using ArcGIS Online with data from NOAA. It uses a 3D representation of buildings along with an adjustable scale to simulate what would happen if sea levels rise by a foot all the way to six foot. The 3D rendering can be seen on a laptop or phone without installing any software. You can zoom in, pan and rotate the image to see the extent of the flooding danger.

TakeAway: Stay dry. Vote for candidates who take Global Warming seriously.
