“I have always thought that what is needed is the development of people who are interested not in being leaders as much as in developing leadership in others.”
In 1957 that Ella Baker made her way to Atlanta to be a part of Martin Luther King’s new organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Specifically, she worked on a campaign to help enforce voting rights for blacks, called the Crusade for Citizenship.
After the Greensboro sit-ins at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, Baker left the SCLC to assist students in organizing themselves. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created.
SNCC joined forces with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and organized the Freedom Rides in 1961. The Freedom movement continued into 1964 with the Freedom Summer and its hope to register as many black voters as possible.
With Ella Baker at the helm, SNCC became one of the largest forces for human rights in the country.
In last November’s election, there were multiple cases of voter intimidation. With even more at stake in 2022, voter protection is more important.
