NOTE – the vote MAY be delayed until Tuesday, Jan 18th because of Senator Schatz’s positive COVID test. Need all Dem Senators present to vote.
Call the Senate: 833-345-2551The U.S. Senate must pass the Freedom to Vote Act, landmark legislation that will protect our right to vote, end partisan gerrymandering, and decrease the power of big moneyed special interests. If we are ever going to see progress on the issues we care about, we must have a democracy that responds to the needs and priorities of voters – not wealthy donors and corporate interests. The U.S. House passed the voting rights legislation in March, and now the U.S. Senate must swiftly pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
UPDATE TO PROCESS – 1/12/2022
The Senate has identified a way to prevent Republicans from blocking debate on the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This morning (11/12) the House sent the Senate a new bill (the Freedom To Vote: John R. Lewis Act) containing both pieces of legislation in a maneuver that allows debate to begin with only a simple majority. In the coming days, we will see vigorous Senate debate on these bills that will culminate in a vote to change the rules to pass the bill. At this time, we know that Senators Manchin and Sinema are still loathe to filibuster reform, but the pressure is building.
