Billionaires vs. America

Billionaires dodge paying taxes but impose their values on other Americans. Corporate politicians cover for them. How is the system rigged? Follow the money.

This StoryMaps shows how billionaires have a different standard of justice and pay different taxes. How they exploit workers and use their wealth to deprive women of their rights and workers of a living wage and the right to organize. It also shows how they spend heavily to buy political influence to get laws written in their favor and get favorable judges appointed.

This StoryMap has a slider so you can contrast the two extremes of America for yourself. Billionaires vs other Americans.

Pardons for the rich. Death for the poor.

“Members of the Sackler family who are at the center of the nation’s deadly opioid crisis (in which 500,000 Americans have died) have won sweeping immunity from opioid lawsuits linked to their privately owned company Purdue Pharma and its OxyContin medication”. (NPR). The Sacklers donate heavily to the Republicans who stack the courts with conservative judges.

“The ‘fake’ $20 bill George Floyd was killed over in Minneapolis in May has been seen for the first time. Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck.” – Daily Mail

Make billions. Exploit workers.

“Walmart During the pandemic, Alice, Jim and Rob Walton saw their net worths climb by over $10bn each. Walmart is the largest US employer with nearly 1.6 million workers. It is owned by the Walton family, the wealthiest family in the world, with an estimated net worth of about $238 billion. Walmart denies workers a living wage and offers terrible working conditions.” – The Guardian

The Waltons also donate heavily to Republicans who block minimum wage and unionization bills.

TakeAway: Use StoryMaps to explain how billionaires have rigged the system to enrich themselves and impose their values on other Americans with the help of Republicans. A party of the rich, by the rich, for the rich.
