SC HOUSE REDISTRICTING HEARING

The South Carolina State House began its public hearings on the redistricting process yesterday in Myrtle Beach. Similar to the State Senate, a committee of representatives will travel around the state to hear constituents’ testimony on redistricting. The committee will hold a hearing in Charleston County next Wednesday night (9/15) at North Charleston City Hall, in the Council Chambers, where we hold our monthly meetings. The hearing will begin at 6 PM.

We did such an incredible job making our voices heard at the Senate hearing last month, and we want to do the same at this House hearing next Wednesday. For more information, you can visit the SC House redistricting website through the button below.

OPEN 1ST VICE CHAIR POSITIONAs we mentioned in our county meeting on 8/19, CCDP is now accepting nominations for 1st Vice Chair at our next meeting on Thursday, September 30th. Please email intern@charlestondemocrats.com if you would like to nominate someone for this position.

Please remember: Our next CCDP meeting is not the third Thursday this month in recognition of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur being on that date. The meeting will be on September 30th, two weeks later.

EAST COOPER DEMS MOUNT PLEASANT CANDIDATE FORUMS

East Cooper Democrats will be hosting candidate forums for both mayor and town council races in Mount Pleasant during September and October. Stay tuned for more details. Our mayoral candidate forum will be held virtually on Tuesday September 28th. Our town council candidate forum will be held on Tuesday October 26th, but the venue is to be determined. In the meantime, please submit any questions you have for the candidates to eastcooper@charlestondemocrats.com.

OFFICE UPDATES

Blessing Box Donations Needed!
Please consider donating to our CCDP Blessing Box. You can #StockTheBox at any time, or drop off items to the office during office hours or by appointment. Our community members appreciate and depend on our kindness!

A few things to remember when donating Blessing Box items: DO donate non-perishable items that will hold up in the heat example: canned vegetables and meats/fish, sauces in jars, boxes of rice or pasta protip: donate items that don’t require milk/butter/oil to prepare, get cans with pop-tops that don’t require can openers
DO donate small personal care items that will fit in the blessing box example toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant,
DO NOT donate any open or expired items.
Homeless Period Project Supplies Needed!
Did you know that our volunteers build period packs in support of the Homeless Period Project? The project provides pre-made kits for homeless shelters and nurse’s offices at Title IX schools in the Lowcountry. These items are a luxury to homeless women and girls and many are forced to choose between hygiene and food. Please consider donating the following items so we can continue to support this amazing project!
-feminine pads
-tampons
-individually wrapped wipes
-panty liners

Thanks again for your generosity!

Our office has limited public hours due to COVID, but if you are dropping off donations, you can email wecare@charlestondemocrats.com or call (843) 577-6000 to arrange a drop-off time.

COVID-19 VACCINE

As we continue to see case numbers and hospitalizations rise in South Carolina and across the country, we want to do everything we can to protect our communities. Therefore, we want to ensure that we provide resources to help people who have not already been vaccinated against COVID-19 to find a nearby place to get the vaccine, which you can do through the button below.

We cannot stress enough that we must not give up the fight against the virus. And getting vaccinated is a vital part of that fight!

READY TO RUN FOR OFFICE?

If you are interested in making a difference in your community, please take time to consider running for office. The South Carolina Democratic Party has put out a form for individuals to express interest in running. You may think that it is too early to start thinking about this, but electoral success will require carefully laid out plans, which in turn require time. In addition to the SCDP information that you can access through the button below, here are more resources for women considering a run for office:
