Local Elections Have Real Consequences
Lean Left Vermont doesn’t support primary candidates, BUT we do work on getting people out to vote in these elections and in municipal elections. There are several reasons for this:
- Voting needs to become a habit. Voters who vote in a primary are more likely to turn out for the general election.
- Local down ballot races are important because whoever gets elected determines funding for things that affect our daily lives from our drinking water to our schools to the potholes in our roads.
- Local governments control how elections are run.
Get Out the Vote and Ballot Chase Actions
The links below will take you directly to the actions on our state action page.
May 18 Pennsylvania Primary: Remind voters to return their ballots.
June 8 Virginia Primary: Increase the turnout of voters of color in Virginia to ensure that all voices are heard in the November election.
June 15 Georgia Special Elections: Two state house seats are ripe for flipping, as are several municipal seats!
Want to know why we’re working so hard in state and local elections? Join us next Wednesday, May 19, from 6 to 7 PM for a conversation with Virginia House of Delegates member, Lashrecse Aird.

When Democrats gained control of the three levels of government in 2019, the state passed laws that improved the lives of Virginians. It is the model for why state elections matter, regardless of who is in charge in Washington DC. But much of the progress the state has made is at stake in 2021. This November all statewide offices — Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General — are up for election, as is the House of Delegates. Virginia could easily turn red.
Delegate Lashrecse Aird, one of our Sister District Project candidates, has been part of this sea change in Virginia. On May 19, she will offer us some insights into the importance of keeping Virginia blue and how we can help!
