This week: DC statehood; For the People Act

Hi Indivisibles,

This week Senator Feinstein signaled that she would be open to circumventing the filibuster rule in order to enact S.1, The For The People Act, which targets voter suppression, gerrymandering, money in politics, and corruption. Thank you to all who have been calling and those who made the special trip to San Francisco last Monday to rally at Sen. Feinstein’s office in support of the For the People Act. It made a difference! One of our actions this week will be to call Senator Feinstein and urge her to stand firm in her support of S.1 regardless of whatever obstacles Republicans put in the way.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that the House will vote on D.C. Statehood (H.R. 51) the week of April 19th. The Committee on Oversight and Reform will mark up the bill on April 14. Our second action this week will be to urge Representative Garamendi or Matsui, both co-sponsors of this bill, to loudly voice their support of H.R. 51 and convince other representatives to do the same.

See the Indivisible explainer for more details on why D.C statehood is critical to democracy reform, and on the white supremacist effort to suppress Black people’s political power that to this day has prevented D.C. from becoming a state, despite overwhelming support in D.C for statehood.

Check out our event calendar at virtual events and actions, including Action Coffee on Mondays and the Fixing our Democracy Action Hour Sundays at 5pm.

Text: Fixing our democracy. Volunteers needed. Blueprint provided. Action Hours: New time! 5pm on Sundays on Zoom. Images are of the Indivisible Yolo logo and of a stylized silhouette of the Capitol building in white on a blue blueprint paper style background.

Our six week series delving into the new Indivisible Guide has concluded – but there is still plenty of fixing of our democracy left to do, so we are extending Action Hour through the rest of the first 100 days of the Biden administration. It’s still every Sunday, but now at a new (and we hope more convenient) time: 5pm. We’ll review democracy reform developments and continue to give you directions each week on an easy action to take to persuade our elected officials to enact the key democracy reforms in the new Indivisible guide.
The next Action Hour is at 5pm Sunday. Slides, action scripts, a tally sheet to track your actions, and the Zoom link can be found at:

Urge Senator Feinstein: Keep to Jim Lazarus’ Monday Promise!

Sample Call Script for Sen. FEINSTEIN:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

I’m urging Senator Feinstein to keep the promise State Director, Jim Lazarus, made to us at Monday’s rally. He promised she will  get S.1—the For the People Act—to the Senate floor for a full vote.

Lazarus promised she will not let it be blocked by a Republican filibuster or stripped of its key provisions.

Voting rights are under attack across the country. We need Senator Feinstein to step up for S.1 now to protect our freedom to vote. Thank you.

Urge Rep. Garamendi OR Rep. Matsui: work harder to pass HR 51

(Note: only one of these 2 Congressmembers represents you. You can find out which one here)

Sample Call Script:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a voter and my zip code is [zip code].

I’m calling to thank Representative [Garamendi /Matsui] for being an early co-sponsor of HR 51—DC Statehood. Now is the time for the Representative to speak out to increase support for HR 51.

I urge Representative [Garamendi /Matsui] to do everything they can to ensure HR 51 passes and DC citizens get their full rights. We need the Representative to do more to secure full representation for the citizens of DC.
