Oppose Florida SB90

The Florida GOP wants you make you sign up for mail ballots every single year. This is naked voter suppression.

Florida Senate bill SB90 is on the agenda for consideration on Tuesday February 16 in the Ethics and Election Committee.

Under current law, a mail ballot request is valid through two election cycles, or up to four years. The bill would require voters to ask for a mail ballot over and over, every calendar year! And to make matters worse, SB90 is RETROACTIVE to the next election in 2022. This means everyone with a request on file for a mail ballot in the NEXT election would have to request it all over again. This will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for every Supervisor Of Elections in Florida.

Action Alert Florida SB40

Via the Florida League Of Women Voters:

SB 48 will be presented in the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education on WEDNESDAY (2/17/2021) at 3:30 p.m. (EST).

A bill moving through the legislative process is attempting to divert more tax dollars away from public schools and further remove public oversight, transparency and accountability.

The League of Women Voters of Florida hosted a Lunch & Learn program dedicated soely to the detriments this legislation will cause. Click here to watch the program which features Rev. Rachel Gunter Shapard of Pastors for Florida Children.

If passed, SB 48 would expand eligibility for school-voucher programs, consolidate existing choice programs and allow parents to use taxpayer-backed education savings accounts for private schools and other costs.

Private schools that take state scholarships also do not have to meet state standards for teacher qualifications, facilities, curriculum or finances. Also, within the last calendar year, evidence has been presented that private schools that accept state money are currently able to discriminate against some of the state’s students without any repercussions.

SB 48 will outsource the oversight of Florida’s $1 billion voucher program to private organizations that will profit from the program expansion. There is no local oversight from elected officials and private organization audits are also reduced from annually to every three years.

Florida’s 3 million+ schoolchildren deserve better. Every child in Florida deserves a thriving public school – and a government that will work toward this goal.

We’re urging every Florida League member to contact the members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education and encourage them to vote “NO” on this bill!

Ask Congress do their job and hold the #FloridaGOPTraitors accountable

We, the citizens of the State of Florida, call upon you to censure and expel from the House of Representatives members from Florida and others states whose craven behavior aided and abetted the lies and disinformation manufactured and perpetuated by then-President Trump that fueled the flames of insurrection and treason, leading to the January 6, 2021 assault by a violent mob upon the Capitol and upon our democracy.
