Are we celebrating yet?
Four years ago, we had no idea how important it would be to rebuild the blue wall of the midwest and dismantle the presidency of Donald Trump—no idea how juvenile and deranged he could be, how craven and corrupt the Republican party could get, how much damage could be done to the norms and values that had guided us for more than 200 years. Day by day our task grew bigger and more difficult than we ever imagined. But we did it. We won!
Unfortunately, the last piece of our victory, winning the Georgia Senate runoffs, was confirmed mere minutes before the soul-killing horror of Trump’s Capitol insurrection. We never had a chance to congratulate ourselves, thank each other, or savor the moment. Even now we’re unsure how the transition will go. But Wednesday evening, after the inauguration, we’re gathering online for what we hope will be the joyous celebration we’ve earned.
We’ll start with a panel discussion featuring the three Illinois congresspeople we helped to elect — Lauren Underwood, Sean Casten, and Marie Newman. Then we’ll be joined by some old friends from the entertainment scene, including singer-songwriter Michael McDermott and Second City veteran TJ Shanoff, who’ll be leading a group of top improv actors in a show created just for us. Throughout the evening we’ll be hearing from and celebrating you — the volunteers who did the work and made it happen.
Please plan to join us from 5:30 to 7:00. If the Biden-Harris team launches its own celebration, we’ll turn into a watch party to share the experience. Our gathering is free, but you’ll need to RSVP to get the link. Please sign up here.
This is the moment you made possible. Please come and enjoy it with us.
