Well, 2021 didn’t start out as the quiet, calm year which we’d been hoping for and which we deserved. Instead, the ceremony where a joint session of Congress counts and certifies the Electoral College was interrupted by a Trump-inspired riot that saw domestic terrorists invading one of our nation’s most sacred spaces. DemCast writers were inspired to share their responses to these events. We published reflections from a candidate who ran against a Republican congressmember who was part of the effort opposed to certification; a look at the legal options for removing Trump; a discussion about people who bear false witness about election results; the thought-provoking words from a rabbi who reminded us that our most important statement is the one we make with kindness; and the struggles of a mother as she grapples with how to explain these events as well as friends and family’s support for Trump to her kids. We closed out the week with a plea to Karen Pence to honor her commitment to mental health by convincing her husband to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove a disturbed and dangerous president.
The nation will be holding our collective breath until the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris — unless the vice president or the Congress take action before then. Most Americans will be counting the minutes until sane, experienced, caring people take up the reins of our government once again.
