Biggest gift you can give this holiday season – Call Congress to stop ICE from deporting detained children
(more info)
These kids are running out of time. They can’t wait out Trump’s last days of destruction.

Over 20 families with young children who are incarcerated by ICE at the Berks and Dilley family prisons are in imminent danger of being deported as early as TODAY. A federal court in Washington D.C. lifted the stay of removal that had been protecting these families from being deported.

These families were denied the right to seek asylum under Trump administration policies that federal courts have since ruled were unlawful. ICE plans to deport these children to face death or torture in their home country. These families, who are from Haiti, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador, have been locked up in unsafe conditions throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The government should correctly apply federal law to allow the families to have their asylum claims heard. The Shut Down Berks Coalition and a coalition of national organizations are requesting urgent Congressional intervention to stop the deportations.

PLEASE MAKE THESE 5 CALLS to these members of Congress and the USCIS to ask them to take urgent action to stop these deportations.

  1. Minimal script – Judiciary : I am not a constituent of Rep. Nadler but I’m calling him in his role as Chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary, to ask that he urgently intervene on behalf of over 20 immigrant children and their parents in the Berks and Dilley family prisons, who ICE is planning to deport to their deaths as early as today. We are asking Rep. Nadler to contact Jennifer Higgins, USCIS Associate Director for the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate to demand that the families’ asylum applications be fairly adjudicated under the law.
  2. Minimal script – Immigration: “I am not a constituent of Rep. Zoe Lofgren, but I’m calling her in her role as Chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, to ask that she urgently intervene on behalf of over 20 immigrant children and their parents in the Berks and Dilley family prisonswho ICE is planning to deport to their deaths as early as today. We are asking Rep. Lofgren to contact Jennifer Higgins, USCIS Associate Director for the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate to demand that the families’ asylum applications be fairly adjudicated under the law.
    • Representative Lofgren – (202) 225-3072 (leave message on Ext. #1) or if full, call San Jose Office at (408) 271-8700
  3. Minimal script – Homeland security: “I am not a constituent of Rep. Bennie Thompson, but I’m calling him in his role as Chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, to ask that he urgently intervene on behalf of immigrant children and their parents in the Berks and Dilley family prisons who ICE is planning to deport to their deaths as early as today. We are asking Rep. Thompson to contact Jennifer Higgins, USCIS Associate Director for the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate to demand that the families’ asylum applications be fairly adjudicated under the law.
    • Representative Thompson – 202) 225-5876
  4. Minimal script to your own rep: “I am calling from [zip code] on Rep. [___] to urgently intervene on behalf of immigrant children and their parents in the Berks and Dilley family prisons who ICE is planning to deport to their deaths as early as today. We are asking Rep. [___] to contact Jennifer Higgins, USCIS Associate Director for the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorateto demand that the families’ asylum applications be fairly adjudicated under the law.

    • Rep. Salud Carbajal: email.(CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348 email.(CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348
    • Share with friends and family: Who is my representative/senator?: https://whoismyrepresentative.com
  5. Minimal script to Jennifer Higgins: “I am calling to urge Director Higgins to grant reconsideration of asylum for families detained in family detention centers who are facing immediate deportation. These include more than 20 families with children who have been detained by ICE in the Berks and Dilley family prisons for over a year. Deportation means their lives will be in danger. These families’ asylum applications have not been fairly adjudicated under the illegal policies of the Trump administration. Give them a real oppurtunity to seek asylum.”

Carbon neutrality by 2045? CA has to move faster! (more info)

WE NEED TO GET ON THIS NOW!: The CA Air Resources Board (CARB) is at work on the next state regulation for cars and light trucks and has stated that it will attempt to complete the Advanced Clean Cars II Rule by the end of 2021.

  • Gov. Newsom needs to move up his target for 100% zero-emission vehicle sales to meet crucial state climate goals, according to a new report by the Center for Biological Diversity
  •  For California to meet its goal of carbon neutrality by 2045, all new cars sold in the state must have zero emissions by 2030 – five years earlier than Gov. Newsom’s target.
  • Because gas-powered cars can stay on the road for 20 years or more, every year without a zero-emission sales requirement means a substantial addition to total emissions. The report found that putting the requirement in place in 2030 versus 2035 would prevent enough climate pollution to keep 140,000 football fields’ worth of Arctic summer sea ice from vanishing.

Minimal script: Governor, 80 groups have asked you, based on science, to speed up our clean car mandate to meet state climate goals and the communities most harmed by fossils fuel pollution shouldn’t have to wait an extra five years to breathe clean air. I urge you to direct the CA Air Resources Board (CARB) to:

  1. Require 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030 and a minimum 7% decrease in emissions each year from petroleum cars in the meantime.
  2. Create good jobs and ensure low-income communities of color benefit equitably from the transition.
  3. Start new clean car standards as soon as possible, no later than model year 2024.

Gov. Newsom – Do the right thing!(more info)

We, along with over 20 CA indivisible groups and the CA Indivisible Green Team, have joined the Black Caucus of the Democratic party in calling on Gov. Newsom to fill Kamala Harris’ senate seat with another well-qualified, progressive, Black woman. Now we’re asking for you to add your voice as well.

Representation of minority voices is important in a legislature that is still 79% white. Women are 51% of the population, but are only 24% of the Senate. When VP-elect Harris leaves for the White House, Newsom’s choice could mean a possible future with exactly ZERO Black women in the Senate.

Considering the huge contribution of Black women in securing the presidency of President-Elect Joe Biden, and the proximity of two excellent choices, Representatives Barbara Lee (CA-13) (full disclosure – Indivisible Ventura is a BIG FAN of Rep. Lee), and Karen Bass, it would be unconscionable for Newsom to select another candidate.

Here are two scripts. Choose one, choose both. Make sure he hears us!

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Gov. Newsom to appoint a well-qualified Black woman, such as Rep. Barbara Lee or Rep. Karen Bass, to replace VP-elect Kamala Harris’s Senate seat. It is important to all of us that that Black women continue to have a voice in the Senate.

Slightly longer Script from the CDP Black Caucus: I’m calling from [zip code]. ONE IS NOT ENOUGH; ZERO IS UNACCEPTABLE! Gov. Newsom, far too often the work and sacrifices of Black women go unrecognized and undervalued. Black women showed up and delivered for the Democratic Party and this country. It is time to deliver for Black women. This Thanksgiving, the best way to express our gratitude is to appoint Barbara Lee or Karen Bass to complete Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris’ term to ensure Black women’s voices are represented.

We’re being targeted again by big business, this time in Ventura County! Don’t sign the oil industry’s petition to pollute (more info)

SHARE with others you know on social media!

DoNotSignVC.comCFROG has created great graphics for Twitter and Facebook in both English and Spanish here.

Since Nov. 13, paid signature gatherers have been circulating petitions at big-box and grocery stores, to repeal recently-enacted county requirements that oil companies comply with up-to-date environmental practices for all new wells, no matter how old their original permit. To accomplish their goal of gathering 50k signatures (30,913 min.) before Dec. 10th, a group of oil producers from outside our countymainly funded by Aera Energy a Shell-Exxon corp., and California Independent Petroleum Association (CIPA), are pushing the message that your support will save jobs, make gas cheaper, and help the economy. These claims are untrue or misleading. Please warn others about this campaign on your social media.

Tell your legislators that it’s time for D.C. statehood (more info)

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] to tell Rep. [___] to become an original cosponsor for a new D.C. statehood bill.

More script if you want it: This is our chance to not only stand up for the rights of D.C. residents, but to build a stronger democracy that more accurately reflects our values of equality and fairness for all.

Tell your representative to get rid of the “Motion to Recommit” and the “PayGo” rules  (more info)

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] to tell Rep. [___] to vote to remove two provisions that present a barrier to the progressive legislation we expect to see from [him/her): the “Motion to Recommit” (or “MTR”) and the “Pay as You Go rule” (or “PayGo”).
