REPLACING RUTH BADER GINSBERG:  Our hearts are breaking at the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg on Friday evening.  In less than respectable time, McConnell started working on gathering the needed votes to confirm her replacement on the Supreme Court before the election.  https://www.politico.com/news/2020/09/20/mcconnell-supreme-court-votes-murkowski-alexander-418910  As of Sunday afternoon, Senators Murkowski of Alaska and Collins of Maine have said (Murkowski more directly than Collins) that they do not think it is proper to jam a Supreme Court hearing through and that the logic used for Merrick Garland needs to hold:  https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/09/20/lisa-murkowski-opposes-ruth-bader-ginsburg-replacement-before-election/5845511002/   Here are some other ways to contact senators to tell them to hold off until after the inauguration: do one, do all:

 1)   From Indivisible: “Call your Senators now and demand they REFUSE to consider any Supreme Court Justice until the new president is inaugurated. The American people deserve to have their voice heard in what could shift the courts irreparably for our lifetimes. “Let’s use this:  https://indivisible.org/demand-your-senator-refuse-confirm-any-new-supreme-court-justices

2)     Use Resistbot to text RBG to 50409 to tell your senators not to confirm her seat until after inauguration day!

 3)    One activist said that her rep told her that one well written letter is more impactful than all the petitions and Resistbots and form letters sent. Let’s hand write a letter, scan it, then upload and send it to our senators using Fax Zero, where we can send five free faxes each day.

 4)     Several senators made pleas in 2016 why Merrick Garland’s nomination should be postponed until after the inauguration.  Let’s use this list with quotes and send postcards or faxes to them reminding them of what they said then and that we want the same terms now:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GfGmehNt-x1gX_LP49ynrBMktWpc4_-4/view?usp=sharing

 5)     We need at least two more Republicans to to step and stop the madness. Let’s start with Mitt Romney (Utah) and then go to Senators up for re-election in flippable seats: McSally in Arizona, Gardner in Colorado, Tillis in North Carolina, Hyde-Smith in Mississippi, Ernst in Iowa, Graham in South Carolina, Sullivan in Alaska, Daines in Montana, Cornyn in Texas. Whether we live in one of these states or can contact people who do, let’s make sure these Senators phones are lighting up with clear messages that the hypocrisy will not stand. Messaging: using McConnell’s own “rule” there must be ZERO movement on this process until after the inauguration. Here’s the Capitol Switchboard number for reaching Senators: (202) 224-3121

CORRECTION:  CHAD WOLF CONFIRMATION: Earlier this month the GAO determined that Chad Wolf was serving illegally in his position as Acting Secretary of Homeland Security.  https://www.politico.com/news/2020/08/14/gao-chad-wolf-ken-cuccinelli-ineligible-dhs-395222  Trump has now put forth Wolf as the nominee for the position.  Let’s remember that under Wolf’s leadership ICE has been continually reckless and harmful of so many immigrants in detention.  He is the one who sent federal officers to Portland to quell the situation.  Now we’ve learned that he and other DHS officials have tried to influence intelligence.  Wolf is not the kind of person needed in that position.   https://apnews.com/d7ae362072de52c44aea48bbac57c156  Wolf’s Senate confirmation hearing was tentatively scheduled for last Wednesday, but he did not appear. Let’s make sure our Senators and know we oppose him.

TRACK THE REGULATIONS TRACKERS:  Track the Trackers is a list of different websites tracking deregulation in the era of the Trump administration. Of Federal sites, their regulatory agenda which lists “regulatory reform” and what stage the revision is at – notice, proposed rule, rule, or not published yet. Individual federal agencies also often, though not always, post proposed regulations and/or actions on their website.  Let’s check this out and see where we can help:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z-0C4ntd4uMrJMubCa3JyKVwotiNV_Vj/view?usp=sharing

POSTCARDING OPPORTUNITY:  From one of our own: Please use/share/distribute in any way you’d like. My additional request is that for every postcard you write using this info, please write an additional get-out-the-vote postcard (just google get-out-the-vote postcarding groups for possibilities). We need to continue to hold elected officials responsible for what’s going on right now, but we also need to be building the blue wave for November. We can do this!   Let’s write:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_xOZZ99yFAmmwBIWcWGgn3Vlp8ZJ1QXBpKNWFYPafmQ/edit?usp=sharing

 ELECTION/VOTING

ELECTION – GET OUT THE VOTE (GOTV)

 ELECTION – SUPPORT CANDIDATES

FLIPPING THE SENATE: Unsurprisingly, the GOP has wasted zero time turning into monster hypocrites regarding filling the Supreme Court seat of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who died on Friday evening at the age of 87. After refusing to hold a vote on Merrick Garland after Justice Scalia died in February of 2016, they have found contorted ways to justify jamming through a confirmation hearing in a very short span:  https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/sep/19/ruth-bader-ginsburg-mitch-mcconnell-donald-trump It has never been more important to flip the Senate to Democratic control in the event whether or not they can be slowed. The folks at Crooked Media (Pod Save America) have made it very easy to contribute simultaneously to 13 Senate races: 11 Democratic challengers within reach of flipping a seat and 2 Democratic incumbents at risk of losing their seats (Gary Peters in MI and Doug Jones in AL). Managed via Act Blue. the Get Mitch or Die Trying fund raised $13 million overnight after the news of RBG’s death broke. Let’s give as generously as we can to reach these 13 key races:  https://secure.actblue.com/donate/getmitch

USE MONEYBALL STRATEGY FOR BLUE VICTORIES: After the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we are even more fired up and ready to fight, but where will our efforts make the most difference? Where can we best invest our time, energy or money to produce these results: win the Presidency, flip the Senate Blue, or put the brakes on Gerrymandering? The Princeton Election Consortium https://election.princeton.edu/  suggests focusing on Moneyball States, states with the where influencing a small group of voters can lead to these very large results: above 270 Electoral college votes for Biden, 50 Democratic and Independent Senate Seats, and bipartisan control over redistricting in certain states: https://election.princeton.edu/2020/08/09/whats-more-important-than-a-presidential-probability/  Current Money Ball States:

President: Nevada, Arizona, North Carolina.

U.S. Senate: Montana, Alaska, South Carolina, Kansas.

State legislatures: Kansas, Texas, North Carolina.

We can keep this in mind as we chose where to focus our support, then share with friends on social media.

 ELECTION – REGISTERING VOTERS

PHONEBANK TO HELP REGISTER YOUNG VOTERS IN BATTLEGROUND STATES: Young people make up an increasingly large part of the electorate, and, if they turn out to vote, could make a significant impact on the election. We can help make that happen this Tuesday, September 22, by joining Vote Save America  partnering with NextGen America  to register young voters in 11 battleground states. Once we’re signed up to make calls, we’ll get a script, calling platform, training, and access to a virtual field office where we can connect with other NextGen volunteers. We can sign up here for a shift to help reach young battleground state voters: https://www.mobilize.us/nextgen/event/319606/?
