The next hours could save – or destroy – the U.S. Postal Service, right on the eve of the 2020 elections.
On Friday, Postmaster General and Trump megadonor Louis DeJoy testified before the U.S. Senate at a hearing Trump bitterly opposed, desperately trying to defend his efforts to undermine the USPS from the inside.
Then Saturday, House Democrats upped the urgency in a big way – voting to advance $25 billion in funding to help the USPS cope with the global health crisis and reverse recent cutbacks.
Now, DeJoy will testify a second time in front of the House – it’s critical that we deploy MAXIMUM public pressure to condemn Trump and congressional Republicans for blocking this rescue package for one of our most vital public services.
Only a few weeks ago, Donald Trump openly admitted he was sabotaging the USPS in order to jeopardize our elections.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump revealed that he is purposefully withholding money from the US Postal Service because of its crucial role in the 2020 elections, saying “They need that money in order to make the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots.”
Then, Trump’s top economic advisor went even further, telling CNBC that Trump was blocking Democratic relief measures because “we don’t want to have, you know, voting rights.”
Our elections are NOT a game. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy, and allowing people to vote by mail safely during a public health crisis is essential. It’s up to us to hold Republicans accountable for failing to fully fund the USPS.
