Senator Susan Collins Sponsored the Bill that Led to Budget Crisis for the US Postal Service that President Trump is Exploiting for Political Gain, and is Affecting Mainers’ Access to Mail-Order Prescriptions and Mail-In Voting

Portland, MAINE — Maine Senator Susan Collins was the Senate sponsor of the 2006 Postal Service Accountability and Enhancement Act, which required the US Postal Service (USPS) to allocate billions from its budget to burdensome pension pre-payments that are not required for other agencies or businesses. This obligation has siphoned billions from USPS operations and led directly to the budget shortfall that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has cited as the basis for the recent cuts to USPS operations, which President Trump has in turn exploited for political gain, threatening to withhold funding to limit access to mail-in voting across the country.

“Susan Collins put an undue burden on the postal service, which provides a vital lifeline for Mainers, and voted to give the corporate interests at FedEx a billion-dollar tax giveaway. This is Susan Collins’ quest for ‘small government’ in action: Giving tax cuts to corporate special interests, and taking funds away from essential public services that Mainers rely on,” said Willy Ritch, executive director of 16 Counties Coalition. “The crisis that Collins helped create with the postal service is threatening Mainer’s health, our small businesses — and our ability to participate in the election. Mainers need a Senator they can actually rely on to protect services we rely on, not gut them in favor of tax cuts for corporate interests.”

These cuts to USPS operations are already affecting mail delivery in Maine, jeopardizing the health of the many Mainers who rely on mail-order prescriptions, and affecting those planning to vote by mail due to the coronavirus pandemic. In sharp contrast to the financial burdens the bill sponsored by Susan Collins placed on the USPS, Collins also cast the key vote for the 2017 Republican tax cuts that provided private delivery service FedEx with a billion-dollar tax giveaway
