Your Calls to Action:

Vote Coming as early as Monday! Call Today! Urge Your Members of Congress to Vote “YES” on Urgently Needed Housing and Homelessness Resources!

Struggling renters cannot wait! Rent is due on July 1, and millions of the lowest-income renters across the nation can’t afford to pay. Eviction moratoriums are expiring, and local efforts to provide emergency rental assistance are quickly overwhelmed by the need.  Without immediate action by Congress, we will see a wave of evictions and a spike in homelessness across the country.

The House will vote next week on H.R. 7301, “the Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020”. The bill includes the housing and homelessness resources: emergency rental assistance; a national, uniform moratorium on evictions and foreclosures; and funds to prevent and respond to outbreaks among people experiencing homelessness.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] tto support H.R. 7301, “the Emergency Housing Protections and Relief Act of 2020

Juneteenth – No more Excuses – Time to make Juneteenth a national holiday. “YES” on HR 7232!

Read about Juneteenth hereVC StarForbes, VOXCNNAJC, bittersoutherner and yougov, the original “Juneteenth” order, why schools didn’t teach about Juneteeth in history class and why it matters.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, (D-TX-18) has proposed H.R. 7232 to “establish Juneteenth Independence Day as a Federal Holiday.” (Cosponsors here. Brownley and Carbajal haven’t signed yet.)

It’s past time to make amends! “YES” on HR 40/S.1038 – Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, (D-TX-18) has proposed H.R. 40 and Cory Booker has proposed the matching S.1083 in the Senate, to “address the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to study and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery, its subsequent de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies” (Cosponsors of HR 40  here. PETITION ACTION for Juneteenth federal Holiday

Juneteenth has been recognized by 46 states and the District of Columbia as a holiday or observance. Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam just declared Juneteenth a state holiday. Many companies, including Nike, Twitter and Square, are making it a paid holiday.

Every year, Congress passes resolutions “recognizing June 19 [fill in the year] as an observance of historical significance.” It’s long past time to add “Juneteenth – Emancipation Day” to the list of federal holidays and to be added to the list of national observances. (which includes things like “National Safe Boating Week,” for goodness sake).

  • Sign NY Dem. candidate Jamal Bowman’s petition here.

Call your legislators – this isn’t business as usual…

You don’t have to be on a sidewalk to have the power to make a difference. A phone, both as a camera and as a communication device, is an amazing tool for justice.

Minimal Script: I’m writing from [zip code] to support the police reform measures outlined by the Leadership Conference and their 430 partner organizations in a recent letter to Congress. We cannot wait for substantive solutions that end police brutality. I want you to take responsibility today for creating federal standards that limit the use of deadly force, eliminate no-knock warrants, and end distribution of military equipment to local police. Thank you.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: email(CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

No more contributions from law enforcement unions

Minimal script: I want to ask the Senator/Asm to do what Senators Wiener and Gonzalez have already done and donate all contributions they’ve received for their re-election campaigns from law enforcement unions to community organizations—ideally those helping people of color or at-risk youth. Those Senators have also pledged to not accept contributions from law enforcement unions going forward. I want the Senator/Assemblymember to do the same.

Call State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (SD-19): SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805)988-1940 email
