An update on our 2020 Blue Gala

3 mins read

A lot has changed over the last two months. The coronavirus pandemic has affected thousands of us in Miami-Dade County. We pay tribute to the frontline healthcare workers who are battling the virus, and we say thank you to the volunteers and workers who have helped in food lines around Miami-Dade. And we say thank you to all of our volunteers who have stayed committed to our vision of electing Democrats up and down the ballot who will bring much-needed change to our country.

That work is just as vital as it has ever been. How we go about funding that work has changed. And that funding is just as important as ever.

It turns out, our focus on promoting Vote-By-Mail was prescient, as we work to ensure that voters are not forced to choose between protecting their health and exercising their right to vote. We now need to reach hundreds of thousands of Democratic voters in Miami-Dade who are still not signed up for Vote-By-Mail. Reaching them all involves scaling up our current program in a big way, and that takes resources.

Unfortunately, Republicans haven’t stopped campaigning and they haven’t stopped raising money just because of the pandemic, and we can’t do that either.

For the past several months, we have been working with our Blue Gala Chair, Miami Beach Commissioner David Richardson, to hold an ambitious Blue Gala on July 25 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. And even though Miami Dade County and the City of Miami Beach have begun a slow, phased re-opening, we do not plan on holding large-scale in-person events as a party in the near future.

In consultation with Blue Gala Chairman David Richardson, we will transform our 2020 Blue Gala into an all-virtual series of events. The 2020 Blue Gala will be a series of live-stream events with several special guests lined up for virtual meet-and-greets.

Mark your calendars now for the week of July 13-17, when we will be holding a series of events, celebrating the diversity and unity of our party with several inspiring guests.

This is 2020. We can’t afford to hold back in our efforts to restore our democracy. And we can’t afford to hold back on our Blue Gala fundraising, even with social distancing. So this series of events will have a spot for everybody. Everyone is needed, and every contribution is appreciated.

Thank you for all that you do.

Yours in the fight,
Steve Simeonidis
Chair, Miami-Dade Democratic Party

If these were normal times, we’d be eating pizza together. But we still have postcards to write and other volunteer/donation actions to share!
