With less than one month to go until Florida votes in our Democratic Presidential Preference Primary, the Miami-Dade Democrats continued our extensive Voter Registration efforts this past weekend. Florida has closed primaries, and so we encouraged as many voters as possible to register with the Florida Democratic Party by February 18 so they can have a voice in Florida’s March 17 Presidential Preference Primary. Our trained Voter Registration volunteers helped hundreds of people register to vote or switch their party affiliation to the Democratic Party.
Many trained volunteers participated in this effort, led by our Voter Registration Chair Marybeth Prusher and our Voter Registration Co-Chair Lisa Askowitz.
Lisa Askowitz and many volunteers from throughout the county hosted a voter registration booth at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. Over three days, they drew lots of attention with their new flags and registered over 150 people including many new voters! They helped current voters to update their addresses, changed the party affiliation of many voters to Democrat, signed 80 new voters to request mail ballots, answered questions, and provided election information. It was a tremendous success!
Our Clubs and Caucuses also had an amazing weekend. Eddie de la Vega of the Miami-Dade Democratic LGBTA Caucus led a group of volunteers at the Gay 8 Festival on Calle Ocho on Sunday, promoting the Party, registering dozens of voters and signing voters up for Vote by Mail. And they had a great visit from two stellar Democratic leaders: Congresswoman Donna Shalala and County Commissioner Eileen Higgins.
Edith Owens and Phyllis Lehman of the Miami Gardens Democratic Club registered voters after church services this weekend. Frank Morra and Mary Breeding of the Florida City Dedicated Dems canvassed to register voters in Naranja.
The South Dade Dems and the Northeast Dems registered voters at Farmer’s Markets and the Miami Beach Dems and the Kendall Dems were all out in their communities, at the park or the shopping center, registering voters too. We are so grateful for the hard work of our clubs and caucuses.
Now we need YOUR help! Do you have a suggestion for an event where we could set up a table or send a trained Voter Registration team? We are always looking for more events all around the county where it would make sense to send Voter Registration volunteers. Fill out this form and we will see if we can add it to our schedule.
With over 600K registered Democrats in Miami-Dade, we represent the largest number of Democrats of any county in the state of Florida. We want to work with all Democrats to organize and effect change around the issues that will improve lives of those in our community. We invite you to sign up for email updates, and join us at county and local club meetings to learn how to get more involved.
