According to Federal Election Commission Chair Ellen Weintraub, soliciting anything of value from a foreign national in connection with an election is illegal. Asking a foreign country to investigate a political opponent is “something of value” and it interferes with our fair elections. The President openly broke that law on the White House lawn on national television when he asked not only Ukraine, but also China to investigate the Bidens.
Why is this a big deal? The Framers of the Constitution were most concerned about foreign influence in our elections. A foreign country that can influence elections could install their own candidate as President. This is the main reason they decided against Congress electing the President. They understood members of Congress could be corrupted, and could endanger the republic.
The United States of America is a republic because of its free and fair elections. When our elections are attacked, America is attacked. If we cannot count on our elections to be fair, our republic becomes whatever the ruling group wants it to be. It very well could turn into a dictatorship instead of a democracy, if we do not take care to guard against that.
Unfortunately, some of our members of Congress are choosing to deflect rather than insist adherence to the rule of law. Some say Democrats are still upset about the 2016 election, or that they have been trying to impeach the President since he was elected. This is not the case.
There is a large group of citizens concerned about the criminality of this administration. It is not just Democrats, but also groups like Republicans For The Rule of Law and other people who have carefully read the Mueller Report. The Mueller probe outlined many crimes and led to the indictment, conviction, or guilty pleas of 34 individuals and 3 companies. No one was exonerated in that report.
You may also hear Members of Congress or the Vice President say, “We must investigate corruption.” It is absolutely appropriate to investigate corruption, but our government has the Federal Bureau of Investigation to do that job. We do not need to solicit interference into elections by asking other countries to do the job of the FBI.
It is dismaying to see these members of Congress and the Vice President choose party over country, and provide cover for possible illegal activities. If we are going to continue as a republic, we must hold our President accountable. An impeachment inquiry is the first step in doing that.
There is also a large group of citizens who support this President. If you are one of those citizens, please consider setting that aside to make sure we are protecting our republic first. I’m not asking you to quit supporting him. I’m asking you to be an American first. We “pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
If you want to help ensure that our republic continues, please call your Senators and call your representative and let them know you support the impeachment inquiry, and would like them to support it too. We must make sure there is no foreign influence in our elections.
