Let us take a quick peek at the MAGA Republicans’ plans to attack our reproductive civil rights.
Trump has bragged that he personally is responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade and says he believes that “there should be some form of punishment for the woman.” We need to remember he said that, but there’s more!
And, how about Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court’s war on women’s health and the odious decision that has made women second-class citizens and stripped away a woman’s right to making decisions about her own body?! That decision also has thrown the reproductive healthcare system in the U.S. into chaos, with ob-gyns fleeing these restrictive states, leaving women there with no healthcare alternatives.
In Texas, for example, any doctor in that state who performs an abortion, and any woman who has an abortion, could be sentenced to life in prison. Take the case of Kate Cox. This 31 year old Texas mother of two and her husband wanted a big family and were looking forward to having a new child in their lives. 20 weeks into her pregnancy, Kate’s doctor discovered that her baby was not viable and would die. Because her other babies were born via C-section, taking this baby to term would endanger her future fertility. A female judge determined that her case should be an exception and granted her the right to get an abortion.
Ken Paxton, one of the most corrupt attorneys general in the country, decided that he knew better than these supposedly stupid women and petitioned the all-male Texas Supreme Court, which overturned the female judge’s order. It did not stop there. Paxton sent a threatening letter to medical staff and doctors in hospitals across Texas, reminding them that they are subject to life in prison for defying his law. What a peach, huh?
Do not be fooled. The MAGA party wants a nationwide abortion ban. If they get a majority in the House and Senate, and the presidency in 2024, that’s what they will try to get.
Only Democrats give a flying f*ck about protecting the freedoms and protections of pregnant people. The right wing’s obsession with abortion today is not about pro-life. It clearly is about controlling women.
Throughout history, authoritarians have targeted women. Our homegrown wannabe authoritarians only care about the baby when it is a fetus. They vilify the woman for valuing her doctor’s vigilance over her pregnancy and the doctor for sharing a professional, informed medical diagnosis with the expectant mother. When a doctor identifies problems where birth might cause harm to the mother or to the baby’s viability, a doctor is obligated by the oath of the doctor’s profession to truthfully disclose the facts, no matter how painful.
Keep in mind, once that baby is born, this MAGA party says “to hell with the child”, and consistently votes against laws that feed, educate, or care for the child they have forced that woman or family to have. Hypocrisy, thy name is MAGA and Republican!
We cannot afford to put our freedoms into the hands of this MAGA party. They see the healthcare needs of the majority of their country’s citizens as – irrelevant. Very sad. Very true. For freedom’s sake, Vote Blue!
