Political hate speech grooms killers
Actions speak louder than words.
DeSantis condemned the racist killing three Blacks in a hate crime on the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s historic March on Washington to protest racial inequality.
In the past DeSantis has weakened gun safety laws and supported racists. DeSantis had defended a supporter who said “bring back the hanging tree.” “I have a tree and a rope in my back yard,” one audience member chimed in. “Bring back the hanging tree,” added the audience member, drawing laughter as DeSantis continued talking about the court. Asked for clarification on his position, DeSantis’ campaign stood with the hanging tree questioner. – Miami New Times
“DeSantis signed a bill that allows people to carry a concealed weapon in public without a government-issued permit, a top priority for the Republican governor. The legislation also ends an existing state requirement to undergo training before carrying a concealed weapon outside the home.” – CNN

Republicans vote against an anti-Asian hate crimes bill
62 GOP members and Josh Hawley (R-MO) voted against the measure to counter a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes… The bill would also direct the departments of Justice and Health and Human Services to work with community-based organizations to issue guidance raising awareness of hate crimes and require the US attorney general to work with state and local law enforcement agencies. – CNN

Stoking hate for profits and to cling to office
Politicians didn’t invent prejudice, but they are exploiting it for political gain, and destroying lives in the process. Using fear of others to further a political career is hardly new. But in the United States there’s nothing in living memory quite like the anti-immigrant rhetoric Trump deployed to propel his 2016 campaign. He stoked fear of migrants, described Mexicans as rapists, murderers, and drug dealers, and generally tried to frighten voters about Muslims, Hispanics, and others. Tragically, it served him well in his campaign. He became president and he continued his xenophobic reign while in office.
Politicians exploiting differences for their benefit bear part of the blame for destroying lives, they are also guilty of lacerating the very country they claim to serve.
TakeAway: Hold those profiting from hate speech accountable. Register and vote for a Democrat.
