Friday Power Lunch
This week, we will discuss some of the hot issues making headlines in Virginia.
Jennifer Carroll Foy (Former Delegate and candidate for Senate in SD33) was one of first women to graduate from Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Jennifer will give us an alumna’s perspective of the resignation of VMI’s chief diversity officer, a role created in 2021 after a scathing report documented cases of sexual assault and racism at the nation’s oldest state-supported military college.
Now that Gen Z is a force to be reckoned with as a voting block, we’re going to hear what’s going on at Virginia’s college campuses. Kate Slayton (Executive Director, Virginia21) will talk about their work empowering college students and young Virginians to be engaged citizens. She will give an insider view of issues young people care about and Virginia21’s work registering new voters.
Han Jones (Political Director) and Jamie Lockhart (Executive Director) Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia will give an update on the current state of abortion access in Virginia and throughout the South.
With the ending of the COVID-19 public health emergency in May, continuous enrollment in Medicaid is winding down. Kannan Srinivasan, former chair of the Virginia State Medicaid Board (DMAS) under two Democratic Administrations and candidate for Delegate (HD26) will talk about what this means for Virginians’ access to Medicaid.
We will end with some good news from Prince William County Supervisor Andrea Bailey. Prince William County is the home to a new Crisis Receiving Center which increases local service and provides access and capacity for those experiencing acute behavioral health care needs.
