- KEEP GUNS AWAY FROM KIDS
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde shooting, and it’s a day to take action to keep guns out of the wrong hands. One major step we can take is passing safe storage laws. Connecticut has taken the lead in trying to avoid future tragedies with Ethan’s Law, which mandates safe storage of guns and creates stiff penalties for anyone who does not properly store and secure firearms around children. The Connecticut congressional delegation has introduced Ethan’s Law at a federal level. Let’s contact our members of Congress and tell them to co-sponsor H.R.660 and S.173 and push for a vote on this common-sense safety measure. - FARMING FOR CLIMATE, FARMING FOR JUSTICEThe federal legislative package known as the Farm Bill is up for renewal this year, and Mothers Out Front is alerting us to two pieces of legislation that should be included. The Agricultural Resilience Act will reduce agricultural emissions to net-zero by 2040. The Justice for Black Farmer’s Act will address issues of discrimination and land-loss of Black and other socially disadvantaged farmers. Let’s tell our U.S. Senators to co-sponsor S.96 (Justice for Black Farmers Act) and S.1016 (Agriculture Resilience Act) and our U.S. Representatives to co-sponsor H.R.1167 (Justice for Black Farmers Act) and H.R.1840 (Agriculture Resilience Act).
- TELL MARRIOTT: DON’T HOST HATE
Moms for Liberty, the conservative group pushing book bans, drag bans, and anti-LGBTQ+ policies and sparking harassment campaigns, are holding their national summit from June 29 to July 2nd in Philadelphia at the Marriott Downtown. Local activists are pushing the Marriott to cancel this booking. Let’s show them some support by using these talking points to contact Philadelphia Marriott Downtown general manager Ken Reed (main hotel phone number (215) 625-2900) and Marriott International CEO Anthony Capuano at Anthony.capuano@marriott.com to urge them to refuse to host hate. - SECURE A SUPREME COURT MAJORITY IN PENNSYLVANIA
The race for a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court this November is set, with Democrat Daniel McCaffery up against Republican Carolyn Carluccio. A victor for McCaffery would solidify Democratic control of the court at 5-2 ahead of legal challenges for the 2024 election. While Carluccio was not as openly supportive of the coup as her primary opponent, she has made unsupported allegations of fraud with mail-in ballot and declined to state Pennsylvania’s 2020 and 2022 elections were fair. She has also scrubbed language from her website touting her anti-gun control and anti-abortion stances now that she’s made the general. Let’s consider donating to or volunteering with Judge McCaffery’s campaign or the Pennsylvania Democratic Party to help secure this seat. - YOUTH MOVEMENT TO STOP TRANSPHOBIA AND OTHER ANTI-LGBTQ INITIATIVES: ActOut.org is a new organization being launched by Advocates for Youth to train and empower young people to fight back on the state level against transphobic laws and policies. Let’s learn more about ActOut here and encourage the youth in our networks to sign up.
