Oppose Georgia HB54 – School Voucher Bill

As we’ve said before, this is the bill that never dies. We will refer you to a recent article by In The Public Interest about school voucher bills and why we oppose them.
HB 54 would raise the dollar amount of the tax credit voucher to private school scholarships from $120,000 to $200,000 per year. The tax-payer subsidized tax credit vouchers can and will go to private schools that regularly discriminate on the basis of ability, language, income, gender identity, sexual orientation and more—all this in the face of financial needs for public schools.
The tax credit program benefits wealthier Georgians at the expense of other citizens and disadvantages public schools. The official synopsis of the bill reads as follows: A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Article 2 of Chapter 7 of Title 48 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to imposition, rate, computation, exemptions, and credits from state income taxes, so as to increase the annual aggregate limit of tax credits available for the qualified education tax credit; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date and applicability; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
Sponsors of the bill are all GOP and they are John Carson (46th District); Scott Hilton, (48th District), Matt
Reeves (99th District); Ginny Ehrhart (36th District); David Knight (134th District) and Josh Bonner (73rd District).
Contact your Representative and ask that he/she to vote NO on this bill when it comes to the floor. If you are represented by one of the named sponsors of the bill, ask that they reconsider their sponsorship for such a damaging bill. (From Fund Georgia’s Future)
