Congressional District Gerrymandered in 2022?
In my memory, the term “gerrymandering” was used in Elementary and Middle School to describe our young country’s learning curve in voting and segregation, not something that we have to worry about today. However, it is apparent that this is absolutely something that takes place. Last week, three South Carolina federal judges ruled that legislators racially gerrymandered the map of South Carolina congressional district 1 in a constitutionally required remapping in 2021. The remapped districts are shown above.
“The movement of over 30,000 African Americans in a single county [Charleston County] from Congressional District No. 1 to Congressional District No. 6 created a stark racial gerrymander in Charleston County,” the judges wrote. “The percentage of African Americans in Charleston County in Congressional District No. 1 fell from 19.8% at the time of the enactment of the 2011 plan to 10.3% in the 2022 plan.”
Many Democrats say Andrews might be in Congress with a different district. Our own CCDP Chair, Greg Perry, stated, “It is no surprise that the three-judge panel ruled that South Carolina’s First Congressional District map was racially gerrymandered. This was a tool employed by Republicans to ensure that we didn’t have a fair election. I firmly believe that if the Republican-drawn map weren’t created to disenfranchise minority voters, Dr. Annie Andrews would be representing the folks in the First Congressional District today.”
